Changing old oil 140 (3.0) engine

Engine has not been run for 15 years. Wondered if there is an oil flush approach. Years ago they used to use kerosene to sit in a drained engine after turning engine over (start disabled), for a day or so to clean out any oil turned to sludge. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks

    MR drive driveshaft re-assembly

I am having trouble putting the drive shaft (U-joint) back into the stern-drive. My unit is old enough to have the small spacer between the bearings so I need to torque the nut by the gear to 70 ft lbs. I use the hose clamp to align the bearings and large spacer. I assume this hose clamp is to...

gear oil path bottom to top MR drive

This may be a dumb question but now that I have the upper and lower units separated to replace water pump its not obvious to me how the gear oil traverses the water pump area to get from bottom to top. Did I lose an O-ring along the way? The splitting of the drive was really tough because of the...

Upper lower unit drive shaft seal replacement MR drive

Can I replace the seal that the splined part of the lower unit drive shaft above the water pump goes through without removing the upper unit gears. I wondered if it can be pulled down when the upper and lower unit are split. This is the seal that is just below the the O-ring that is not...

    Water pump service shaft seal

While watching the great Achris video on water pump servicing I saw he had a shaft seal above water pump fail. How can I identify this seal to replace on general principle. MR drive shift cable

In process of reassembling MR drive. On the forum there was a comment that the screw at the stern end of shift cable should not be tight but should be able to allow cable to turn and that is what the figure 8 safety wire is for holding the screw without it being tight. Should the cable be able...

Hi After starting the rebuilding of the transom and replacing the broken inner transom plate over a year ago I finally have the engine back in and aligned. MR shift shaft oil seal

I am trying to identify the upper shift shaft oil seal that goes below the upper bushing on an MR outdrive. The bushing is the press fit type not the screw type for later models of outdrive. The manual provides tool part numbers but a part number or place to go to order one would be great. I am...

Question regarding MR drive gumbal bearing

The manual for the outdrive gimbal bearing says notches should face in. Does this mean the two notches that are about an inch and a half long? The reason I ask is that those were facing to the back when I disassembled my drive. I am the original owner and have never had any work done on the...

Water in merc lower unit gear oil?

Can you tell if water is in the merc lower unit oil? The oil put in was that very expensive blue stuff from merc marine. I drained a little and it didn't have any white foaming look to it like motor oil would have.

    Shallow water with I/O troller?

After reading about how much running the I/O in
trailer up position in shallow water shortens the life of an I/O I was wondering if there are electric trolling motors that could be transom
mounted and had electrical or hydraulic lift to
get out of the way. The engine mount...
