This shaft is too long, right?

This is my 9.9 Evinrude on my 1648 Lowe Jon boat. This is a long shaft on a short transom, right? It seems to run fine and will plane the boat with two people. Should I elevate the transom to the correct height or just keep using it as-is? I could certainly fish shallower water if it were up a...

    Ultracraft boats?

A guy locally has a 2006 Ultracraft 16ft fishing boat for sale. Google tells me very little about this brand. Any one have any opinions of them? I would mostly be interested because of the 25 HP Mercury outboard, but It would be a plus if the hull were of good quality.

Battery sizing and load doesn’t make sense

I’ve only owned two “real” boats in my life, but both have had their battery wiring done the same way. The trolling motor gets its own battery and then every other electrical draw is hooked to the starting battery. From both a current allocation and safety standpoint that seems wrong to me. The...

    Tire size mismatch question

Technically I think this question is more about the axle, hub and weight distribution but it’s caused by a tire, so… My 16.5’ aluminum boat (around 1300 pounds including the trailer) came with 13” wheels, but since all 13” trailer tires seem to be garbage I bought a set of 14” wheels and...

Extending the life of primer bulbs and fuel hoses?

Is there any way to make our very expensive fuel hoses and primer bulbs last longer? Maybe treat them with Armorall or some other sort of UV protectant? I squeezed the bulb on my little 9.5 last night and it sprayed gas all over my hand, and that bulb isn’t but a couple of years old.

    Lifting plastic trailer fenders?

I have a 16’ aluminum boat on a trailer with 13” wheels and plastic fenders. I have had two tire failures with locally purchased new tires in the last few years, tires I know were properly inflated. One essentially delaminated itself while traveling 15-20 mph in rush-hour traffic in downtown...

    TCW-2, use it?

I stumbled across a gallon of Evinrude branded two cycle oil that is rated TCW-2. I think I bought it in the early to mid 90s. Would it be OK to use in a modern engine made in 1997, or 2007? My gut tells me it should be fine, especially if I use it mixed 1:2 with my current stock of TCW-3 oil.

Correct prop for mid-60's 18HP Johnson?

I have my dad's old 18HP Johnson Fastwin but unfortunately the prop has somehow gone missing. What's the correct prop to run this motor on a 1648 Jon boat? I also need shear pins and a prop nut, correct? Are those a standard size? Thanks in advance of any help.

    G3 analog tach reading high

I have a 2006 Yamaha F50 2 stroke on a G3 V167 with analog gauges. I’ve owned this boat for four years now and out of nowhere it’s started reading around 800-1000 rpm high at WOT, proportionally less at lower revs. Normal idle at what sounds like around 1000 is reading 1200-1600 over the course...

    Sea King 15hp: what's leaking?

There's cooling water leaking from my mid-60's Sea King (Gale) outboard. You can't really see the source in this video but you can see the general area where it's coming from and where it's pooling. Where is it probably coming from? It seems like there's still plenty of water coming out of the...

Evinrude 9.9 impeller change: learned something new today.

I have a 9.9 Evinrude that’s probably late 90’s to mid 2000’s that I bought used. Given that the paint on the lower unit bolts was intact I doubt the impeller has ever been changed, so I decided to do that today. Imagine my surprise when I learned that the impeller isn’t attached to the shaft...

Dumb question about prop diameter and interchangability

    Deleted. I’m an idiot.

How much of a pitch change do I need?

Edit: I just realized I have asked a similar question before and there were questions about the accuracy of my tach. I THINK it's accurate, but how does one verify this? Is there an electronic gizmo I can buy that will count sparks or touch that I can test it with? My boat is a 16ft. G3 V167C...

ProNav Angler for Minn Kota PowerDrive?

I have a PowerDrive V2 with Bluetooth. For reasons I can't explain Minn Kota has an iPilot upgrade for the ones made prior to 2017 but not for my newer motor. The only upgrade option for my newer motor seems to be copilot, which is just a wireless steering and speed control. Amazon suggested the...

Clearance lights on rear of trailer: how to keep them working?

Like most trailers over 80” wide, my boat trailer has three small rectangular marker lights mounted in the rear crossmember. Occasionally one of them works if I pop off the cover and wiggle the little ‘peanut’ bulb (194) around. The problem is that these lights are submerged every time I back...

Why don’t outboard motors have air filters?

Everything else does. Outboards breathe the same air that cars do, and I wouldn’t dream of running my car without a filter in place. Does the cowl really somehow block all the particulates? Of course I realize there’s a huge difference between being on the water and driving on a dirt road. Just...

Rigging a replacement fuel tank for 2HP Johnson

I inherited a 2HP Johnson outboard from my grandfather. It’s a late 60s-early 70s model with an attached metal fuel tank. The tank is filled with rust, and no matter how well I try to clean it out I find mysl f having to take apart the carb and blow out the rust. The part is long since...

    2006 50HP 2 stroke fuel problem?

I’m having a sudden problem with what was a perfectly running engine the last time it ran a month ago. It’s somewhat similar to the one described in this thread...

What should my RPM be at WOT?

I have a V hull 16" G3 with a 50 HP Yamaha 2 stroke. According to my instruments at wide open throttle I'm going 30 mph and revving at 4400 rpm. That's with the trim adjusted for maximum plane. I don't know the pitch of my prop, but 4400 rpm makes me think I might need a slightly different prop...
