This shaft is too long, right?

Thanks. Somehow I had gotten it in my head this was a long shaft motor.

This shaft is too long, right?

This is my 9.9 Evinrude on my 1648 Lowe Jon boat. This is a long shaft on a short transom, right? It seems to run fine and will plane the boat with two people. Should I elevate the transom to the correct height or just keep using it as-is? I could certainly fish shallower water if it were up a...

    Ultracraft boats?

A guy locally has a 2006 Ultracraft 16ft fishing boat for sale. Google tells me very little about this brand. Any one have any opinions of them? I would mostly be interested because of the 25 HP Mercury outboard, but It would be a plus if the hull were of good quality.

Battery sizing and load doesn’t make sense

It’s an outboard, and fortunately one that doesn’t require extended cranking. It’s just that I frequently am away from power for a week or so and I worry about the extra load. The motor doesn’t keep the battery fully topped off because it often takes a while to being it back to full charge when...

Battery sizing and load doesn’t make sense

This was my thinking as well, but I wasn’t confident I was correct.

Battery sizing and load doesn’t make sense

I’ve only owned two “real” boats in my life, but both have had their battery wiring done the same way. The trolling motor gets its own battery and then every other electrical draw is hooked to the starting battery. From both a current allocation and safety standpoint that seems wrong to me. The...

    Tire size mismatch question

Still deciding, but I’m keeping an eye out for a good used 14” wheel.

    Tire size mismatch question

Fun fact: in the year since I bought them the 14” Goodyear Endurance tires have increased from $118 to $160.

    Tire size mismatch question

I had 13" Carlisle tires on my little utility trailer than only carried a 300 pound lawnmower. Those tires lasted 15 years without a single surface crack, which is nothing short of amazing. They still looked almost new when I dismounted them, and you could tell how much thicker and well made...

    Tire size mismatch question

I’d never heard of them so I did a Google search. Made in Thailand. And I already have my Goodyears anyway. But I did see they are sold by Walmart, so maybe I might try a set when I replace them in a few years.

    Tire size mismatch question

My tires that failed were both less than three years old and less than 5K miles. Both were properly inflated. Both suffered internal delaminations. The second one was sort of a mixed blessing because it happened when I was only going about 20 mph in Atlanta traffic. Mixed because I had to drift...

    Tire size mismatch question

There are no good ones anymore. The previously good brands have outsourced and the quality is gone. I’ve had two allegedly good brand tires delaminate in the last five years, one with less than 2K miles. No decent domestic manufacturer produces a 13” tire but Goodyear does make a 14 that is...

    Tire size mismatch question

Technically I think this question is more about the axle, hub and weight distribution but it’s caused by a tire, so… My 16.5’ aluminum boat (around 1300 pounds including the trailer) came with 13” wheels, but since all 13” trailer tires seem to be garbage I bought a set of 14” wheels and...

Extending the life of primer bulbs and fuel hoses?

Is there any way to make our very expensive fuel hoses and primer bulbs last longer? Maybe treat them with Armorall or some other sort of UV protectant? I squeezed the bulb on my little 9.5 last night and it sprayed gas all over my hand, and that bulb isn’t but a couple of years old.

    Lifting plastic trailer fenders?

One of the plastic fenders is a replacement, the original having been blasted to smithereens when a tire came apart at 70mph. I wonder if the amount of clearance gained by swapping in 14” fenders would really make a difference in a worst case event? When my first tire failed at speed it actually...

    Lifting plastic trailer fenders?

I thought I would follow up. I bought some 14” wheels and mounted the Goodyear tires. It was obvious when attempting to install them it wasn’t going to work with the stock 13” fenders because they wouldn’t fit under the lip to be installed. Replacing the fenders with 14” ones is actually quite...

    Lifting plastic trailer fenders?

This is the boat and trailer if it’s helpful at all.

    Trailer bearing broken

Or just take those bearings with you to the store as examples.

    Lifting plastic trailer fenders?

The difference is 2.1” (26.1- 24) so essentially 1” less clearance up top. It’s probably nothing to worry about but I’m just thinking ahead.
