Yamaha 8hp (model 8SF, 1989) with water in cylinders

Thank you for the reply. I'll take your advice and throw some oil in the cylinders to make sure everything gets coated. Since it fired right up I think I'll go ahead with a carb clean to clean up the low speed orifices and jet and then move on and do a water pump kit and then drain, pressure...

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

The nighttime check sounds like a good idea. I'll definitely give that a try. Will probably be a while before we are able to go for another test run so may be a while before I update it but definitely will let yall know how it goes.

Yamaha 8hp (model 8SF, 1989) with water in cylinders

A friend was given (or maybe "borrowed") a 1989 Yamaha 8hp, model 8SF, from a coworker of his for his teenage son to use on his jon boat. I told them to bring it over and I'd help them go over it and see if its a runner after sitting in the guys shop for years. I think the story was the guy my...

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

Thanks so much! I'll check for that build date asap. So from an electronics perspective, what all could I potentially swap over? swap the stator from the newer motor to this older one as long as I also swapped the dual rect/regs? swap the trigger? swap out CDI boxes? swap coils? We will...

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

No, that's still very informative information. Maybe will come in handy once I get this one back going. Can compare performance numbers to what you stated here.

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

That serial number is off of the transom bracket so I guess that is a bad one to go by. I need to find the one on the powerhead itself. I looked on the top and there is one welch plug and another spot where it looks like one is missing. The present one has the numbers " 6568786" so it doesn't...

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

Just adding a couple pics for clarity. BTW, the carb stamping reads WH-29 (hard to read).

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

Swapping the two reg/rec and stator seems like a good idea then. If I read the manual right, that newer stator is a 40amp one too. Also, I was unaware they were different displacement blocks. What all models did they build off the 2.4l block? 150, 175, and 200? Is the difference the carbs...

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

Yeah it idles about perfect. Punch the throttle down all the way and it goes up smooth and quickly to about 3000 rpms and just hits a wall. Boat nose just lifts up and stern plows water. Engine, despite not going up in revs, sounds smooth and there is no miss, hesitation, surging, etc.

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

I just did static test of the stator and trigger on the 89 model that's giving me fits. I got 4100 and 3800 ohms on the stator low speed leads and then 120 ohms on both of the high speed ones. That's in spec for the 40 amp stator like the 92 model motor has (with 4 yellow rectifier leads). I...

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

It ran pretty well at first. It was a little slower than the the previous motor but they had different props on them as he never swapped them out. I can't remember exact speeds or revs but it probably ran in the low 40's at a little above 5k rpms....so while maybe not propped ideally, it was...

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

My dad bought a 1992 Procraft 185 F&S a couple years back that came with a 92 model 150HP Blackmax, SN# 0D145256. I posted some about it on here a while back but long story short it had catastrophic faiure on the port side cylinders I think. He since found and bought a 1989 model of the same...

Carb Roller Part # for Yamaha 25ESD

Bumping this thread because I found a cheaper solution. After I posted this, I made do by swapping a good roller from another similar year motor onto this one. I still needed a few rollers though as I have 3 of these in my shop to fix up, all with worn rollers, and I just sold the one with the...

Strange power loss 1991 Yamaha 25MSHP

I'm curious about the busted bowl gasket. All carb bowls are vented to ensure they stay at atmospheric pressure so that the venturi can effectively pull fuel through the jets. On this particular carb, the bowl is vented to a spot just under the upper plate/gasket that covers the low speed...

Looking for link n sync on 2008 25 HP 2 stroke yamaha

For future reference, you may be able to pick up a factory service manual on ebay or somewhere for cheap. I have one I paid about $20 for that is for earlier models but they are basically the same motors as the later model ones aside from slightly different ignition system.

Buying brand new Yamaha repair/repair manual or used one.

I've noticed some of the older service manuals have some grammatical/spelling errors that leads me to wonder if they missed some things translating from Japanese to English. Maybe they made minor changes to fix things like that and reprinted with more modern covers?

1994 Mercury 25 - Low Compression Bottom Cylinder

I originally saw one that would be a direct fit for $300 shipped, but it has since sold. That's about the going rate of the older XD style models with no thermo I'm seeing now. Haven't seen an exact match to mine in a few weeks though. I haven't had the time to do any more with it as things...

I'm in Alabama. The majority of the used blocks I have seen online are coming from Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

1994 Mercury 25 - Low Compression Bottom Cylinder

That makes sense. Thanks. So you advise against trying to get it to run and go straight into tear down? I was wanting to verify the ignition system was good apart from just the static spark test....however, the lower and electric start assembly is all in really good condition and I guess...
