Low Compression in two cylinders and blowby

Yup, heads can be repaired or replaced if the rest of the engine is ok. If you need to check the rings on 4 and 6 you could pressure test the port head on the starboard bank. BTW that's a known spot where head gaskets fail, often from high pressure like water in the cylinders or too much...

    Replacement long block

I'd seriously consider replacing exhaust manifolds and risers. ie. don't reuse them unless you first verify they are nearly new. Manifolds can be tested by blocking their water passages and pressurizing their water inlets. Leaks into the exhaust are fails. I imagine there's a way to check...

No start after cap change and wire hacks

For it to start the shift interrupt needs to be hooked up. AND the little button in the shift plate must be out.

    Crank, no spark. Need advice.

If you still have the tach disconnected it's probably causing the no go. Hook it up (after insulating the bare part), and give er a try.

    1984 --5.7 / 260HP camshaft ? REPLACE

Something is not right with that duration. Find a marine cam. Or one that effectively copies marine stuff. You'll need large-ish lobe separation and far less duration than that (at .050) and still a good bit less at .006. That looks like a high compression car cam by it's numbers. To get some...

    5.0 Mercruiser Problems

You are on the right track. Absolutely check all the tuning setup stuff. On the Mercruisers there is a process to set timing which depends on which ignition you have. See if it's Thunderbolt V. I'm not up on later years like an 09. I'd not buy another prop yet. I'd suggest externally clean...

Looking at a boat with Volvo power

Appreciate the input. I really do enjoy working out all the ifs and buts. Main reason I would even think about power adder is that the engine would not need to come out. The prochargers for Mercruiser can run as much boost as I'd dare anyway without pulling the engine for ring filing. And some...

Looking at a boat with Volvo power

Boat is kinda special to me 01 Chris Craft Constellation but the low speed is not for me. I have been enjoying my little Formula F223LS. It's pretty dialed at this point. But I can never leave things alone. I put on an AFR gauge and vacuum gauge to really get it maxed and with the added rpm...

Looking at a boat with Volvo power

Reason I asked is the boat would be far better off with a big block. 5700 lbs. Can a swap be done? Does a certain type of big block plug and play?

Looking at a boat with Volvo power

I'm going to check out a boat with a Volvo Penta setup It has a 5.7 dual prop drive. Question, does the same drive go on the 8.1?

    350 Mag Pilot Bushing

I may have asked this before but it is a nagging question. In Mercruiser manual 17 there is a reference to a pilot bushing that says "if old pilot bushing is to be reused" and goes on to explain how to pack the old bushing with grease to run a cylindrical dowel down the middle and hydraulically...

    Mando 55 amp voltage regulator

Dunked the ol tub yesterday and saw she wasn't charging so I put her back on the trailer. I have the electrics of a 97 350 Mag carb. Which means 55 amp mando alternator with internal regulator. I had already bought a regulator for it as precaution. Alternators do just die. So I put it in...

    Setting a 2010 cobalt 232 on a trailer

OOPS, deadrise is measured at the transom. And be sure to have a few hundred pounds of tongue weight. Otherwise you'll have the tail wagging the dog. Rule of thumb is 10 to 15%, but many boats are a little low.

    Has anyone installed trailer guides?

I did some carpeted low guides. All they touch is the lower sides of the hull, just in front of the transom. They are like 1/4 to 3/8" away from the hull when loaded up. if needed, my wife finesses the stern with a boat hook to put the rear of the hull at the center of the trailer.

    1989 Mercruser 3.7 alpha one

I second achris, the OE are superior in quality. Plus the aftermarket ones seem easier to botch.

    ignition harness

on this page you can get a later Mercruiser harness. It would require a boat harness too. But if the engine is fine otherwise... https://bpi.ebasicpower.com/search_2/show.php?q=wire%20harness&qid=5567&tr=%20Wire%20Harness_Inboard%20&%20I/O

shift cable outer housing stuck in coupler

Yep, worse thing is I watched a video from SEI on it, and he showed that. Plus he said to have someone in the boat to guide it too. Another thing that happened to me was that I could not get the cable housing into the new shift bellows until I removed the bellows from the boat and used a...
