    not charging

    1988 mercruiser 5.0 Chevy v8, alpha 1 out drive. volt gauge on dash reads battery voltage running or not, ammeter on alternator output wire shows nothing. I am unfamiliar with marine alternators, what do the other wires do? What is the best way to isolate the problem?
