Happy boat motoring season 2021. Just acquired a green tank Mercury KG5 (5 hp) in vintage condition. It had been sitting for years, he said. Does it have a title? NO. Does it run? DON'T KNOW. Will it turn over? NO. Externally it looked pretty good and everything was all there. The gas tank has a few dents and will need some paint all things works out. I wanted a project that I could take to the basement as a winter challenge, so I knowingly paid too much for this gem, hung my head and took it home. Once in the basement removed the lower cowl, gas tank, spark plugs, carburetor. With the throat for the carb facing up poured in a good amount of Marvel Mystery Oil. Then turned it over and filled the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil/deiseal fuel, installed the spark plugs, sat it upright and left it to soak for 3-4 days. With the aid of a strap wrench to put pressure to turn the flywheel and a brass punch tapped lightly on one piston then the other (many times) finally got it moving back and forth and turning free again. For about 5 days each day turning the flywheel a couple of times each way (while keeping the cylinders wet with Marvel Oil) It now turns free like new. Haven't checked compression as yet but pulling the rope it feels strong.
Down to the question- When the flywheel came off it looks as thought the two coils and points have been replaced, Yaaaa!
The two ends of one of coils are flush with a radiused flat on the ignition plate. The ends of the other coil hang over the radiused flat on the opposite side. What is the correct way to set the coil end clearance between it and the flywheel? Thank you in advance for any help. Rich
