    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Yeah, it doesn't quite fit in still. It was painted thinking I was doing a white and orange console then suddenly went military crate on it so it's an oddity for now. Once the rest of the orange surfaces in the boat are painted it might fit better. Wish I had new guages with the orange glow I...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Thanks! A friend randomly gave me that pool ball a long time ago bc they knew 13 was my lucky # (and favorite color orange) so I figured this would be an interesting new life for it vs the shelf life. Ignition I have left out till last bc it only needs a small drill hole and I haven't decided...

I love information like this! For the better fuel distribution part- am I understanding this correctly that this means the different firing order in that situation helps the fuel distribution as in it flowing through the manifold and to the heads more efficiently? Just want to make sure I'm...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Thank you sir, I am sure loving the nice warm tone of the spar varnish on there, really brings out the he grain and definitely darkened the stenciling. I wish I had gallons of this stuff now!

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Was able to repurpose the ragged edged scraps of the old console and turn it into a binnacle mount. Thinking this is red oak or teak or something. Definitely highly rot resistant to have survived the neglect. 3rd coat of spar on the crate console

Ah, that makes sense. The 351 heads and carb make quite a difference on this motor. Well I know just what to do then if the motor blows up. Thanks!

    Mercruiser Controls

Well thank you for getting carried away because now we are both a step ahead! I am going to shop around and see if I can find a parts binnacle like you did, seems like a good idea in case I lose any other parts! The thing was connected and apparently fell out somewhere when I was bringing it...

I was looking for an overall model # but it seems like it isn't clearly marked or the label is gone. Found casting # 380 37607 which is a cam part # inside the unit. Thanks for the link!

Reason being I am trying to source the special little pin and tiny clip (pictured) that the cable end needs for it to work again.

Yeah, mine turns clockwise looking at idler pulley, counterclockwise from flywheel. I'll probably pull the carb over the winter to assess everything with it. And thanks for the part numbers! Wonder what the deal is with the 188hp rating.. Seems they usually round off 100+ HP numbers to nearest...

    Pistons on Ford 302 / Mercruiser 188

Well I learned something today, thanks for the explanation! I didn't realize that's how the throttle worked on those, that totally makes sense though and can imagine the sound must be totally worth it when those end carbs open up. Look, sound, and feel are far more important than just slip...

    Mercruiser Controls

Hello, was wondering if anyone can better identify this "Mer Control" control box. Looking for maybe a more specific name, model, whatever you know about it. It is off a 1974 Starcraft Chieftain but may not be original equipment. Single lever control for single engine Mercruiser 188. Casting...

Great point there, I have done this on vehicles with small alternators that have to run a winch and it makes a huge difference. I'm sure you know this but your typical small 12v incandescent bulb (like in a brake light) uses a boat load of amps for the amount of light it puts out! The LED's...

It's ridiculous how much basic building materials go for these days isn't it!? The last couple years have been an insane price hike with so many things... That panel looks like a nice one. Sea Choice seems like a good, quality brand in my experience. Thinking you got it covered just in time bc...
