    Question On Changing Stringer Location

For any first timers: *This is for a 16ft 1986 Deck boat* A) I have/had no clue what I was doing. I used the forum for pointers. Here's a list of supplies and tips in no particular order. 1) haven't laid the deck yet, however, so far, I've gone through about 7 gallons of polyester resin. 2)...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

There was an air pocket towards the bow on the port side. Actually, there were a few, and I sanded them all out and re-glassed. Unfortunately I didn't take pics.

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Hey guys! Sorry for the Hiatus!! Winter was brutal here, and our boat doesn't fit in the garage!! Got 2 layers on the new stringers, about to finally lay a 3rd. Had to grind out a few air pockets, but so far so good. Stringer doesn't move at all, but gonna lay more glass just to be safe. Got 2lb...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

*Sigh* It's coming. Slowly but surely between work and cold or rainy days. Been cold here lately, making it a little difficult for the layups to cure. Don't want to over-catalyze. I'll post pics soon. I've got the first layer of glass down over almost everything! Been using csm since I got a...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Update to any first timers, or anyone watching this thread. Been glassing for a couple days. 1) Plan on buying an entire roll of glass, and at LEAST 5 gal of unwaxed resin. I've got the first layer of glass down and I've used about 3 gallons and 5 rollers so far. Also, before using the bubble...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Yes. I butted them up together perfectly, and laid some putty on top of where they met. It is slightly uneven across the top, but the plan is to to come back and level it out with my jigsaw after I glass it, as the stringers are too tall and have made the deck curve an extra 1/5". Also, I have...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Glassing today!!! If anyone is still following this thread, looking for tips, make sure you label and separate EVERYTHING. Aft stringer, bow stringer, and each bulkhead placement (I labeled them 1-4). Also, as I'm prepping glass today, label each piece of glass with a sharpie. Ex: A1 (aft...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Yeah! I forgot to put that in my post. 4" diamond wheel for cutting the stringers out. I went through 3 36 grit flapper disks and a big flat head screwdriver to clean it all up and get to fresh glass.

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Update!!! Got the main stringers set (first pic). Two coats of resin per board. Used a metric butt ton of poly putty from the local marine shop to bed them. A TON. Gonna throw some bulkheads, which have also been resin'd, in the middle about every 3 feet (3 bulkheads in total). They weren't...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Yeah. I went pretty slow and steady. There was a gap under the old stringer, but almost a half inch above the hull that the wheel slipped into and I followed that.

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Also, from what I've gathered around the forum, when I ground out the channels, I got them fairly clean and level. Most of the rotten wood flakes out if it hasn't turned to mud like most of mine.and I used the PL/ poly putty to build up any voids or gaps. I really slathered it in there lmao...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

As far as difficulty level, I can only speak on my project. I've read a ton of threads on this forum about stringer repair, however, with my boat being a deck boat, and with me removing the ski locker and changing things up, although the principle is the same (grind, sand, clean, measure, cut...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Still working on it! Lol it rained for about a week here and then I had to go out of town for work for about a week Lol. Resined the boards. Took a couple tries with the foam to get the shape right, but I got it. I got the hull ground out pretty good, laid poly putty in the stringer channel, set...

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

IF, and that's a huge IF, I decide to custom build them, should I consider going with 1" only as opposed to the 1/2" or 3/4" that was originally there?

    Question On Changing Stringer Location

Thanks Capri. Now see, that's what I meant by the boat "crease". When you ground out your old stringers, they was a 1/4" or so channel for you to put the new ones into. If I keep grinding mine, it'll just be a flat section of hull, because there is no boat "crease" at that location.
