    Crank, no spark. Need advice.

Yeah it’s not difficult. Had to do it a third time this Spring myself.

    Power trim check valve?

Ah yes, the cylinder seals may be leaking by. That is more probable. Thanks

    Need advice from experienced people.

I noticed water on my spark plugs years ago so figured my head gaskets were leaking on my 5.7L. When I pulled them i found cracks in both heads. Pistons looked fine. I found a shop with an eBay store that sold rebuilt heads and I shipped the old ones to them in exchange. It wasn’t too expensive...

    Power trim check valve?

Hi guys. Alpha 1 gen 1 outdrive. The drive creeps down fairly quickly and I continually have to bump it back up. It will actually creep down on the trailer just by gravity. Do I have a check valve in the hydraulic system bad?

    Crank, no spark. Need advice.

Could be the ignition sensor in the distributor. I’ve replaced mine 3 times in 14-15 years. Two of those times it just died with no spark.

Camshaft Replacement on Vortec 4.3L 262

I’ve heard of people using a cam from a truck engine. You might consider that.

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Ok here’s update. Jumper on the + to the coil no change. Jumper on - on the ignition ground wire no change. Disconnected all other wiring connections to the ignition system no change. Replaced the ignition sensor in the distributor and presto, problem solved! Took it out for the day and rode it...

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Yes. I have the service manual for the Tbolt system and setting the timing has never been a problem.

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

I’ve got a Mercury Quick Silver 3 wire sensor on the way. I’ll also make some jumpers to ensure solid power connections, and disconnect everything possible to isolate any potential damaged wire. Hopefully I’ll finally solve this. I’ll post an update next week.

Iboats sells CDI and Sierra brand sensors.

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

I did disconnect the tach at the coil as you recommended. I’ll be sure to order the OE ignition sensor. I guess that would be Mercruiser?

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

I thought about that. I’ll add a ground jumper for the ignition module also to be sure the system has a solid power connection.

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

It idled good. Just misbehaves under any amount of load. Both times I replaced the ignition sensor I think I bought the Sierra potted unit. But that’s been a few years back.

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Yes I replaced it twice prior to this problem. Both times it just completely died. I have not replaced it yet while dealing with this problem.

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Sorry, I later determined the problem still persists even with the tach disconnected. I’ve replaced the ignition sensor twice prior to this issue. Both times it just completely died when the sensor failed. I don’t recall if it is two wire or three wire. But I’m thinking it’s two. I may swap it...

Yes I replaced the wires. The Thunder Bolt IV I have is a sealed box.

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Ok here's the latest update and summary: misfiring / stuttering bad under any load at all. By the end of the season last year we couldn't even use it. It got progressively worse all last year. What I've done so far: Sprayed fuel directly into carb while sputtering to see if it was starving for...

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Ok finally spent a full day on it before winterizing. Ruled out a lifter problem as there is no tapping at all. Ruled out stuck valve as compression test shows good on all cylinders when cold. Used a spray bottle to mist fuel into carb and nothing changed so it’s not a fuel delivery carb...

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Battery terminals are clean and tight. Also the battery is only a few years old and I always get the best one available. 14 volts when idling. Yes electrical bugs can be a buger. I’m an old EE with a lot of troubleshooting experience. I chased that about as far as it goes thinking it was an...

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Yes I adjusted the valve lash when I replaced the heads a few years back. I have seen the technique you’re talking about and yes that does sound messy. But I may not have a choice. Thanks
