    Anodizing Outdrives

Eh, I have all of the chemicals needed for anodizing. Lead cost me $25 for 10#. Only cost is the lead and dye. Have a DI system set up at the house for work. More for learning than anything else. If it works out, I think it will be pretty cool. If not, after all the money spent to restore the...

Got a lot more sealing done today and we got the rub rail on. As you can see, there's still a good bit of excess 4200 to clean up around the cap rail. It's coming off. Slowly but surely. I just don't want to spray these areas with brake cleaner so that I don't break down the good stuff under...

    Anodizing Outdrives

Has anyone ever done this/had it done? I see this being much more beneficial than powder coating. "Paint" is not on top of the aluminum, it's in the outermost layer of it. Also better for corrosion protection. Don't know if the outdrive parts are anodized before painting from the factory...

    Cut through fiberglass hull

I did this on mine. I ground a dime size hole in the hull. Rub some painter's tape on your jeans then tape up the outside of the hull pretty well before glassing. This will keep the resin from dribbling down the outside and rubbing it on your pants first makes it easy to peel off. Made a nice...

    1987 Larson DC-215 restoration

Lot of sealing today. I got the cap back on and sealed some thru hulls. I was so mad. 3M 5200-4200 literally says it won't web or droop...Wrong! I got it everywhere! But, I learned a secret after trying just about everything, including the 3m remover they recommended, to clean it up. I'll...

    1987 Larson DC-215 restoration

By the way, I tried the stripe off wheel, plastic chisels, and razor scrapers. The stripe off wheel worked ok for parts of it. Plastic chisels and razor scrapers got the bulk of it off. I ended up using a bristle wheel to get it all off. It scuffed the gelcoat a bit but I don't care. It didn't...

One thing after another. Put the garboard plug in. Sealed it up with 5200, tapped it into the drilled hole, and screwed it in with 3 SS screws. Top two screws went in fine. Bottom one broke off while hand tightening. It broke off in the glass, so I can't even get a pair of vise grips on it...

What are the essential tools to keep on board?

Spare starter motor, battery, and alternator! All three have saved my butt from being stuck several times. Although the starter on some mercs like mine is impossible to change in the boat.

You're right. There are no accessory mounts. Found a pair of complete vortecs on ebay for $225. Neighbor also has several more sets of pre-vortec heads. Will look around this weekend and make a decision.

By the way, that dripping milk looking stuff all over the hull is the primer. It goes on pretty drippy but it evens out and turns clear after a few minutes.

Got the finishing touches done on the glasswork today. I also cleaned the hull out the best I could and got the primer for the deck coat on as well as the antifouling paint for the transom. The next few days I'm just going to be coating the deck and the transom.

Called several shops. One had 906 casting heads. $300 stripped. The guy did tell me that these heads are very, very prone to cracking. Questioning whether or not I want to put them on in place of pre-vortec heads.
