1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

Its been a lot of work just to get this far. So much more tear down left to do. It's honestly difficult to keep myself convinced that the boat is worth all the time, money and effort. Interesting observation, the transom had definitely been replaced before. It wasn't very well done though.

1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

Mine is a bow rider. I had a chance to pick up a free 1992 cuddy hull in pretty good shape, but I really prefer the extra seating for my uses. It was also a 17.5' hull, and I didn't really want to go with a smaller boat. I've been caught in some high swells before (about 5 foot), and definitely...

1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

Yeah I'm sure I'll get over it soon. Honestly, once the tear down is finished I'll be a lot more relieved. As far as the stringers go, I don't really care if they are good or not. Either way I'm ripping them out and replacing them. Seems like a dumb choice to even consider leaving them at this...

1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

I am definitely feeling a bit overwhelmed with this job. Seemed a lot simpler before getting started lol.

Ok, thank you. From everything I've seen everywhere 2 layers of 3/4" is perfect. I decided I will do Coosa for the transom. I have the transom wood all stripped out now, still have to do some grinding and trimming. Most of the rotted deck areas are now removed. Removing the solid decking areas...

First Image of the terrible rotted deck. Heading to buy a mini circular saw to make the deck removal go a lot easier.

1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Resto Begins

Well, it is time to start the tear down of my old Bayliner. Thank you everyone who gave me advice in my earlier thread. Pulled the engine and transom assembly off today. I was definitely over optimistic about the transom being good. Now the first question I have is how thick should the wood be...

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

What do you all like to do to make a nice finish for a Gel Coat deck? I have never had fiberglass turn out nice and smooth. So, Gel Coating over it might not turn out well.

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

Yes, its all in a complete running boat. The seller is letting me help him pull it all out so I can make sure to get all the parts I need.

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

Well I have located a 4.3 Mercruiser set for $2000. Going to have a look at it tomorrow. I'm told its good running and was on the water this year. He offered for me to help pull it. So, at least I can make sure I get everything.

Yes, I will definitely add in the mounts for the 4.3L while doing my rebuild. Hopefully a good deal will show up over the winter months.

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

Yes I agree now a restoration is best for me. Only change I might make is a larger engine compartment/platform instead of its current setup. I really only thought composite was going to be better because of the price of marine plywood. However, now knowing to use the much cheaper Arauco...

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

The last few years boat prices have been crazy. I recently noticed someone selling a Bayliner in way worse condition than mine for $4000. Ultimately, after everything everyone has said I agree its best to fix up my Bayliner rather than buy another old boat. That bigger engine sure would've been...

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

Could you post a picture of that frame you use? I've made one before, but always still ended up with a 200 lb block of ice on the cover after a storm.

You mention shrinkwrap may not be the best. Being that indoor storage is not an option for me, should I be doing shrink wrap, or just a heavy cover? We can get a lot of snow, so I've always thought of shrinkwrap as being better.

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

Well, I decided I am going to go ahead and restore my Bayliner. I figure that'll be better than finding other problems on another lower cost boat.

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

Do you think it'll likely have far fewer problems? It was obviously cared for better. The owner said its shrink wrapped every winter and is always covered when not in use.

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

Yes for sure. Terrible a boat with very little use, and stored inside most of its life, got destroyed from a few years of nobody caring.

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

Sadly no pictures, that was 7 years ago. The transom samples were taken at the bottom, mid, and top. Stringer samples were taken mid height, at the rear of engine compartment, front of engine compartment, and as far forward of the hull as I could get.

    1988 Bayliner Restore or Replace

The cost to restore it I do think is worth it. My hesitation mostly just comes from the time it'll take, and not really having a good place to do the work (live in an apartment). I keep it parked on the street at my sisters during the summer, and at my parents in the back during the winter...
