Merc 850 Inline 6 Piston Scoring

Hey everyone thanks again for your help. Sadly, my garage burned down over the weekend taking with it many of my most special possesions, including the Merc 850 and the boat it went on. So needless to say this project has been put to rest. I do appreciate the advice you all gave me though...

Merc 850 Inline 6 Piston Scoring

By the way this might be a dumb question but you are saying to just get all the cylinders bored out for all new oversized pistons correct?

Merc 850 Inline 6 Piston Scoring

Fair point. Yeah I had a feeling that was going to be the case. Looks like I’ll be taking a break from this project to save up some money to do it right. Thanks the advice!

Merc 850 Inline 6 Piston Scoring

Visually, the cylinders didn’t look bad. I didn’t have time to measure them last night, as I was fixing my truck as well and moved back to that soon after I got the crankshaft out. I just took a quick look on marineengine.com and found 5 piston/ring sets available. They are around $150 each, so...

Merc 850 Inline 6 Piston Scoring

A slide hammer is a pretty good idea, I didn't even think of that. I just need to get a table vise for my garage... Do you have any thoughts on the pistons by the way? Thanks for the reply.

Merc 850 Inline 6 Piston Scoring

Hello everyone. Lately I’ve been in the process of tearing down and rebuilding my 1964 Mercury 850 6 cylinder so it is fresh and ready to go for next year. Today I split the crankcase halves and pulled the crankshaft out and found that some of the pistons had some scoring on the sides. Although...

1998 Johnson 115 Prop Shaft Seal Replacement

Thanks for the suggestion. Once he gets the bearing carrier out, is there a preferred method for removing the seal? Or would a regular seal puller work? Thanks for your help.

1998 Johnson 115 Prop Shaft Seal Replacement

Yes, we did already do that, but here is a screenshot of the exploded diagram of the LU from marine engine. The seal in question is #27.

1998 Johnson 115 Prop Shaft Seal Replacement

Hi guys, today I am asking a question regarding my dad's 1998 Johnson 115 Fast Strike on his 1999 Glastron Fish and Ski. For some background, he has had this boat since it was new off the showroom floor, and has always done a great job of maintaining the motor. As far as he can remember, it has...

1964 Mercury 850 Water Flow Issue

Yup the stuff I use is quicksilver sae 90 gear lube, which is blue.

1964 Mercury 850 Water Flow Issue

Ok so I did just take a sniff of that substance and it does smell exactly like gasoline. I did also notice when I took a look at the gearcase lube itself just now, I saw that it was a completely different color (blue) as opposed to that other substance (brownish). I will pressure test this...

1964 Mercury 850 Water Flow Issue

Ok thanks for the information, very helpful. I do have some more questions now though. First, how would you go about pressure testing the case? I assume there is some sort of fitting that would attach to the gear lube drain hole. Is there a specific tool to use? Second, do you know what that...

1964 Mercury 850 Water Flow Issue

One thing that I did notice was that after I started the motor again just now, I saw that the water that was coming out of the back of the lower unit was also pushing out what looked like gearcase lubricant. I do know that that chamber leads down to the little "bleed" seep hole on the very back...

1964 Mercury 850 Water Flow Issue

Hey guys I would delete this thread if I knew how to, I feel really silly right now; here I made this massive post only to find the answer 15 minutes later. I took an air compressor and blew into the telltale hole, then I hooked up the garden hose again. Water started coming out of the hole. And...

1964 Mercury 850 Water Flow Issue

Hi guys I am mostly a lurker here, but I have a problem that has stumped me. Sorry for the long post, I just want to make sure people have as much info as possible. Last summer I bought a 1964 Mercury 850 inline 6 outboard for $150, and the seller told me it had not run in many years. I have...

Motor only fires up when key is turned to off

After extensive testing, I found out that the trigger was indeed the problem after all...lol. I miraculously was able to find a replacement online, and sure enough that fixed it. Thanks everybody!

Motor only fires up when key is turned to off

Well I wish I could say it's a happy ending, but it isn't. I ended up testing the distributor, the coil, and the switchbox and they all worked fine. After this and some further testing, I found that the spark plugs only seemed to work when the ignition switch hit a certain position somewhere...

Motor only fires up when key is turned to off

I ended up replacing the positive battery wire, yet this still hasn't fixed the problem. I just finished testing the white and brown wires according to the CDI PDF and it seems that the brown wire stays at 0.5 volts when cranking until the key is turned off, at which point the voltage jumps to...

Motor only fires up when key is turned to off

It's been a little while since I've followed up, but I think I may have narrowed down the problem to a wiring issue somewhere between the starter solenoid and the ignition switch or battery. For context, I ended up putting the motor back together yesterday and tried turning it over again, but...
