Hi guys, today I am asking a question regarding my dad's 1998 Johnson 115 Fast Strike on his 1999 Glastron Fish and Ski.

For some background, he has had this boat since it was new off the showroom floor, and has always done a great job of maintaining the motor. As far as he can remember, it has only had one major issue since he bought it, and that was that the power pack failed, which he had replaced by a marine mechanic quite a few years ago. The boat itself he uses pretty much exclusively for fishing now.

Last week he decided to replace the prop because the old one was in very rough shape (it was also the original). When he took the prop off, he saw that the propshaft seal had fishing line wound all over it, and some of it had even intertwined itself into the end of the seal itself. Upon further inspection, he found that the end of the seal had separated from the rest of the seal, and was spinning freely with the propshaft.

He has since been struggling to figure out the best way to remove the old seal and replace it, and I have been trying to help him with that. Unfortunately, we are stumped on how to remove it. We originally thought that he could drill a couple holes into the seal, put some screws in the holes, and use a puller on the heads of the screws to pull the seal out, but he is afraid that he might damage the prop shaft or the bearing carrier.

If you guys have dealt with this seal or something similar on these OMC's and have any suggestions on how to remove it, that would be great. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the suggestion. Once he gets the bearing carrier out, is there a preferred method for removing the seal? Or would a regular seal puller work? Thanks for your help.

Small pry bar or hefty screwdriver works-----Pry in an area with backing to prevent damage to bearing carrier.
