Motor only fires up when key is turned to off

I ended up taking the cap off of the distributor and can now see the trigger. Are there any signs I should look for that indicate whether or not it's bad? Thanks for the clarification. For some reason, my motor doesn't have this safety switch in it, or at least it isn't where it should be.

Motor only fires up when key is turned to off

I re-wired 90% of the wires a couple months ago because they were falling apart. The rest look fine. I'll check the trigger though. What am I looking for to see if it's bad? Sadly, there doesn't appear to be a mercury switch in the motor. There is a ground from the distributor to the...

Motor only fires up when key is turned to off

Neither one of those are the same as my ignition system, but I just found this picture that is the same.

Motor only fires up when key is turned to off

No, I haven't replaced the key switch. As for the other information you gave on the key switch, I'm afraid I'm not quite sure what you mean. To add some context, I just finished rebuilding the motor and was attempting to start it yesterday and it did the same thing...until after fiddling with...

Motor only fires up when key is turned to off

Hey guys, I'm really stumped on this one. My 1967 Mercury 500 will spin and spin and spin when the key is turned to crank, but it won't start. However, once I turn the key is turned to off, the motor fires up for a second then quits. Do you have any ideas on what the problem might be? Thanks.

    Cracked mercury powerhead

Ok...do you think that JB-Weld would at least stop or slow the degrading process, or would it just melt due to heat from the cylinder walls and the exhaust? I guess what I'm wondering is would it help at all, or would it just cause more problems? I just don't like the thought that the motor...

    Cracked mercury powerhead

Are you sure that just running the motor with the crack untreated won't make the crack expand/widen because of heat from the cylinder walls and the exhaust gases? Just making sure. Yes I do have the pistons removed, here are some picutures of them with the rings on still. They seem to be in...

    Cracked mercury powerhead

Thanks for your input, overheating does seem like a very likely cause for the crack given the other problems the motor has been having. Any ideas on how to repair the crack? The "dimple," as you call it, is the roundish mark I was talking about that was caused by the impact of the power drill.

    Cracked mercury powerhead

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum, although I have lurked here for awhile. Basically, I have been repairing and rebuilding the powerhead on my 1967 Mercury 500 Thunderbolt due to an unrelated issue. While doing this, I noticed that there is a 1.25 inch crack running along the outside cylinder wall...
