    Mercruiser 165 shift cable bellows

Thanks again, everyone. So the rainy weather is coming here in the Pacific NW. Since my garage is a mess with boat stuff, I had to change the timing belt on the 2008 Kia outside. Nice day, but I hate doing that job. It's my wife's daily driver, so she's happy! I can see the aluminum nails in...

    Mercruiser 165 shift cable bellows

Thanks, everyone. It's a Chevy inline 6, 250 cu in, 165 hp. The outdrive is a 165, from the S/N around 1974 like the boat. The u-joint had lots of grease, very smooth bearing. The only place with a bit of saltwater powder is right around the torn shift bellows. I've looked at a lot of old...

    Mercruiser 165 riser elbow plug

Hi, alldodge- The head of the plug is kind of short on meat now. So if I drill with 9/16 bit, and then get an extractor in, where do I heat? The plug or the body? I have an OA torch. I'll have to get an extractor that big. Thanks!

    Mercruiser 165 shift cable bellows

Ah, okay. If the shift cable bellows let water into the boat, it also let water into the rest of the outdrive. So it sounds like the first task is to remove the hinge pins and separate the gimbal completely from the bell housing. Do I need to buy the special puller for the hinge pins, or can...

    Mercruiser 165 riser elbow plug

I switched out a bad exhaust elbow for a newer one that I have. The difference is that my engine is setup for "reverse flow" on the coolant line, so I need to put a 1" MPT x 1" hose fitting into one of the pipe plugs on the new riser elbow. The pipe plug is not cooperating. Wouldn't budge, so...

    Mercruiser 165 shift cable bellows

So I have a free boat that is actually looking to be not too bad. I have a running engine on a pallet that is almost ready to install. The last owner told me the leg was recently rebuilt before he left the boat sitting because of what turned out to be carburetor problems. I just removed...

    Mercruiser 165 distributor breaker plate

I have a "new for me" 160 in really good shape. The distributor had a really old electronic ignition (maybe Mallory autolite) but no control module. My 165 had a cracked block. So I'm planning to use the breaker plate from the 165 on the 160. The distributor on the 160 looks new (weights...

    Mercruiser 165 distributor breaker plate

The breaker plate on my salvage Mercruiser 165 (Chevy 250 Inline 6) is looking pretty crummy. The Mercury part is 33665 but is NLA everywhere I've looked. Would an automotive Chevy 250 breaker plate be acceptable? I know that the "marine" distributor is different from the "automotive"...

    Mercury 500 50hp, 1976

Well, I got a spark plug checker (just the cheapie from HF), but I can verify all of the spark plugs are sparking. There's gas in the carburetor, but it's just not hitting at all. Usually if you have air, at least a bit of gas and a spark you'll at least get it hitting a couple of times. I...

    Mercury 500 50hp, 1976

Thanks for the info Chris. Are there any "downloadable" manuals? Or do I need to look on eBay/Amazon/craigslist and find a used one? I was looking for the first "troubleshooting" steps. I guess one of the first steps is to use a spark plug tester and see if the engine is generating a spark...

    Mercury 500 50hp, 1976

So I have an old Starcraft aluminum boat with a Mercury 500, 50hp electric start (1976 according to the S/N). It was getting a bit warm, so I replaced the water impeller (toast) and got it all back together. Of course, when I was so excited to finally try it out, the key broke off in the...

    Mercruiser 160/165 exhaust elbow

Thanks, Chris! I do notice that when I look at places like marineengine.com, the parts lists and pictures have lots of "superceded" parts, sometimes 4 or 5 that finally lead to the "current" or "latest" part number. Also, it sounds like I should definitely install a "water shutter" to keep...

    Mercruiser 160/165 exhaust elbow

Pic1 part 22 is the "water separator tube" that apparently just presses in to the bottom of the elbow. Pic 3 shows the tube and part number. Pic 2 shows the gasket - you can see 3 oblong holes in the gasket for the water passages. On the 160, the gasket and elbow have 4 oblong passage holes.

    Mercruiser 160/165 exhaust elbow

I'm scavenging parts from a Mercruiser 165 (Chevy 250 with a cracked block) to complete a Mercruiser 160 that I got from a salvager. The 160 is very clean - no grease or grime, oil is very clean. I really just need to get the wiring figured out (the main plug is different), get points...

    Mercruiser 160 carburetor

Ok, I'm a little confused. Do you mean use the 165 valve cover with the "breather vent tube" from the cover to the flame arrestor? And then remove the tee at the carburetor and only have one connection from the rear of the air horn to the fuel pump? So only the dual diaphragm pumps with the...

    Mercruiser 160 carburetor

Ah, okay. I think I get most of it now. In the pre-1975 days, there wasn't a fuel vent safety line requirement, yes? And there were lots more fires, yes? In the picture I posted above, you can see there is a "tee" at the airhorn connection on the carburetor. One line goes to the clear tube...

    Mercruiser 160 carburetor

Here is an annotated picture of the 160. The valve cover had a "breather style" cap (which I lost in transport), not a cap and a separate breather to the flame arrestor (like the 165).

    Mercruiser 160 carburetor

My "free boat" had a 165 Inline 6. The block was cracked. Removed and disassembled the engine. Most everything looked good except the block. The carburetor is a little cruddy, but probably serviceable with a rebuild (Rochester 2GC). I bought a 160 from a salvager that looks really good...

    Mercruiser 160 "reverse flow"

I got a 160 from a boat salvager. Looks to be in really good shape - just need a couple of items to try and run it before I put it in my "free boat". I need to get the cooling reconnected. I think the last owner was in the middle of replacing the riser/elbow but didn't quite finish. The...
