1985 Black Max 150 Hp Leaks oil out of reservoir cap. I replaced the cap and still leaking.

No worries. Best of luck. But honestly…I’d strongly urge you to do away with it altogether. Absolutely well known for failing horribly these things. Totally up to you of course. Best of luck either way. All the best.

2017 115hp efi fuel issues please help

Hi. Simple thing to check out. If you have the wee round quick connect fuel line connector with the wee red tab that goes into the engine..they can be known to have the internal o ring seal perish very quickly (with the ethanol fuel these days). Happened to my 2016 115. Means they can draw air...

1985 Black Max 150 Hp Leaks oil out of reservoir cap. I replaced the cap and still leaking.

I’d absolutely say (from horrible past experience personally and knowing of many others who suffered the same), that you should almost certainly do away with the oil injection system on that engine anyway. Wouldn’t normally say such a thing about most other injection systems on mercs and Yamaha...

1990 Bayliner Trophy with twin Force 120s need advice on prop sizes

Fair play. If that compression is accurate, it’s a fairly lofty set of figures for sure. Best of luck.

    Intermittent Start Issue

Outwith the most likely cause being battery/connection/earthing/continuity issues…I’d maybe just quickly make sure she isn’t getting intermittently hydro locked. Hopefully not…but just make sure I’d say. Maybe being fussy and pedantic around your account of 12v being evident….but if you are...

Why is gear oil leaking out of lower unit when running?

Not sure that’s actually oil. If it is..make sure you aren’t overfilled in the sump. Was she fogged before winter and maybe that’s all it is ? Other than that, maybe your muffa aren’t sealing right and it’s aerated water ? Possibly some salt water gunk perhaps otherwise ?

Constant ringing noise from throttle when motor is running.

Hi. Outwith the chance of high temperature, I wouldn’t assume that the alarm isn’t for oil, just because it appears to be burning it with smoke. If your oil is low, it will alarm too.

    1985 mariner 40hp service manual

That’s maybe a Yamaha engine I’d think. Might be an idea to post in the Yamaha section under the guise of the identical Yamaha version

1990 Bayliner Trophy with twin Force 120s need advice on prop sizes

At the risk of being mr pessimist…first thing I’d do, is rule out the likelihood of anything nasty, by doing a compression test on the engines. Hate to say it…but those things have a nasty habit of not holding together too well..out with the exceptional few examples that have been meticulously...

    Question about water in bilge

Outwith the bellows or drain plug leaking… A source of water on boats like this can often be a head scratcher at first…but then at some point, it’s common to find that the water has been in the boat all along. Just that it’s sat un noticed up forward, in a storage void, ski locker or similar...

    Am I under proped?

If it’s genuine doing 5000 rpm…it won’t be great for a 3.0 maybe. Very few 3.0 18ft boats will require a pitch of more than a 21”. There are some, but not many.

A prop question (enertia or other versus older props)

Hi. Couple of things from me. So that enertia prop in particular, at that size..isn’t the normal enertia prop. That’s almost certainly the enertia eco prop. They have a huge diameter in comparison. So much so, that should you have a trim anode fin or similar on the drive, it will contact it...

The usual distributor cap will throw its hand in at some point for sure. But good engines.

First startup for the season and then died

Fuel and the infamous distributor cap would be my top two. Especially after storage.

    Prop Help

For a big boat to engine ratio like you have…I’d say you are running that engine height a little high there. You look about 2-3 inches above the lower hull line. That’s fine on a high performance boat with the power to lift the hull with trim and a stainless prop to hold onto the water. But...

    Mecury 4hp 4 stroke 2009

I’d also check the fuel line exit from the tank and the shut off valve. There is a strainer in there somewhere if I remember right. Sure there is. But I’ve had that many of these things in bits, I could be describing another engine. But worth a check for sure. Empty the tank and carb completely...

    Mecury 4hp 4 stroke 2009

Apologies. What you have described is the way it is. Sorry. Yeah. No need for a gasket on air box side. But should be 3 somewhere further up. Remember that much. Think I maybe also mentioned earlier or in a similar post about the oil that can get taken up into the carb. Even if it’s laying on...

    Prop Recommendation: '85 Merc 50hp 2-stroke - 16' Alumacraft

Hi. I don’t think it’s the prop…unless it’s something daft like a 16+ pitch. But anything from 10-13” should be normal. If this is the classic 50hp Merc…they are actually not even 50hp. They are closer to 40/45hp. Anyway…. Personally I’d be back to looking at fuel and ignition. Plugs etc. an...
