    Humminbird 575.

I have been looking to replace my old fish finder and the humminbird 575 strikes my fancy, but neither Pro bass shop nor Gander mountain offers them in their stores and it seems that the only way to get them is online. Is there some hidden defect that caused this fish finder to be hard to get in...

    Blue fin tuna population collapsing.

I was listening to an NPR report about mercury in tuna fish and one of the things mentioned was that fully one third of our blue fins reproduce in the Mediterranean where they are being slaughtered while breeding and the rest reproduces in the Gulf of Mexico where they are caught on long lines...

So you think big oil did better?

Ha,I did much better than that. This year I more than DOUBLED my profits on Ebay. From $11.50 to $23.30. That is over 100% increased profit while my overall revenue is smaller. Big oil can't hold a candle to that sort of profit percentages.

    steering cable

I am considering changing from an old steering cable system to either a rack or rotary system. So far I found out that a rack is a bit cheaper but not enough to be a mayor factor. Could any of you gurus tell me the pros and cons of the two systems? I intend to use one of them on a 17 foot 1964...

    fuel effiency and fuel prices.

As some of you may know I have been in Europe in December and I did see a lot of things that are dealt with in a different way than they are here. One thing is fuel prices. In the Netherlands one liter (roughly a quarter gallon) of gasoline costs 1.60 Euro ($2.40) or about $9 per gallon. So they...

    Trip Report.

It has been a few days since we are back and jet lag has worn off a bit,so here's what we did in Europe and why we did it. First the why. Two reasons. My father, bless him, celebrated his 93th birthday and rather then see him again at his funeral I decided to go and visit him while he is around and...

Changing a flat bottom,to prevent sideways sliding.

I have this beautiful 17 foot Duratech Orion, but she has a few serious control problems. Instead of cutting through a wave like most deep Vs do,it slides off sideways specially when she is on plane.Every time she hits a wake wave I have to slow down to a crawl in order to keep going where I want...

    little tidbit of new knowledge.

Yesterday as I was listening to Michael Feldman's "What do you know" section of his show on NPR there was a bit of new discovery. As it turns out,the dinosaurs died out about 6000 years ago. This bit of knowledge came from Kentucky from a museum called the Museum of Creation, or some such name...

70 horse johnny threw a rod.

I have been offered a late seventies Johnson 70hp outboard that threw a rod right through the crankcase. There is a hole about the size of a quarter in the crankcase. I would have to replace or repair the crankcase, which does not seem to be a real big deal.I know that the engine did not set up...

    "special" tools

In every manual you will find a list of special tools that the average shade tree mechanic does not buy because they are often expensive and he will probably not use them very often. Most of us make do with what we have in the tool box,or we improvise and come up with very interesting tools...

    1967? merc 850/950 lower unit.

Ok, so I could not contain myself and I had to rip into things that I had never seen before. I picked up an 850 lower unit and tried to put it on a 950.It almost fits, just a few adjustments says I to myself. It started with cutting away a bit of aluminum to make room for the exhaust housing that...

    Lower unit compatability

Here is another question. I have a possibility to buy a 1964 850 mercury lower unit for my 1967 950 mercury. Do you good people know whether the lower units can be interchanged and is the gear ratio compatible? Thank you for your answers and opinions.
