Ok. So I found a good block -a 1987 chevy 3 liter-replaced its guts and everything looks dandy. The points ignition was replaced with an AC Delco electronic ignition and the timing was set with a timing shunt according to the specs at 1 past top of cylinder, which is base time for these...
Can any of you good people please tell what the base timing for a 1986 140 horse is?
The points have been removed to make place for an Ac Delco electronic ignition system with distributor. I just need to set the base timing to begin the timing procedure and I do not know what it is.
Thank...
So I am busy rebuilding a 140 horse engine and the usual f-ups happen.
So far I destroyed a piston and damaged a piston rod.
Looking for a piston rod turns out to be a bit of a challenge. Specially when you do not know for sure which year the engine is from.
As it turns out, from the mid sixties...
I'm just wondering,
Did any of you good people ever use a dual steering cable with one cable going to the I/O and the other to the kicker?
If so, what were the pros and cons?
Currently I use the E Z steer system and it is less than perfect.
Rolmops.
I am doing a valve job on this engine (my first ever) and I am wondering about the valve spring cap seal, that little rubber ring that sits on the valve. How important is it? can I go without or is that not such a good idea? If I need it,is it the same one that is on the 305 chevy block or is the...
I found another 140 horse engine for my boat and right now I am in the middle of completely overhauling it. One thing I need to replace are the piston rings (the engine was frozen and although it came loose, the rings were stuck up to the point where they broke while being eased out. The rings I...
Yesterday I did another compression check on my tired old mercruiser and the results were not good. 90-110-110-150 with some oil in the cylinders it goes up to 130-130-130-150 and I made the decision to replace the engine or rebuild it. This will be a winter project.
Is it possible to use a...
Hello everybody.
My Mercruiser currently runs (labors) at 3600 rpm running a top of 26 MPH in flat water trimmed out the right way.
The current prop is a Mercruiser prop #48-78120-A401-19P. This is a 14x19.
To go up 800 RPM I should just go down from 19 to 15,but most props I find are closer to...
Hello Guys.
I have been offered to buy a running mercruiser 140 engine (#2960713)1968 to 1972 for $150. The owner told me that it runs and has not been over bored and the compression is 120/120/120/70.
My own engine is a 1984/5 that has one low cylinder (90). Can I over bore (if necessary) the...
My 1984 19 foot Islander does not have its original engine cover and I would like to build one that is close to the original.
I need to know the measurements and if possible a picture or 2 so I have something to work with.
This is for an I/O 1984 Islander with the 140 horse engine.
Thank you...
While servicing my trailer I found some serious differences between the axle capacity of the trailer and the capacity that the registration claims it to be.
The previous owner had told me that the axle is a 5200 pound with high speed spindles, and the registration is for a 3500 pound axle.
But...
My trailer has no brakes right now,but since I haul a 19 foot Starcraft Islander I must put some brakes on it.
The spindles are high speed spindles with a 5200 pound rating. The inside diameter is 1.25 inch and the outside is 0.75 inch. The bearing sizes are LM67048 and LM11949. the hole size is...
A while ago I changed the ignition on my 140 horse mercruiser from points to a Delco distributor which I bought from Michigan Motorz.
It worked just fine and setting the timing was easy. Today, after having run the engine flat out and having taken it down to 800 rpm to go through a no wake...
And so the saga continues.
This time it was the gimbal bearing, but this really feels like wrapping up odds and ends.
After another trial run I decided that she really is a bit too noisy, so down came the outdrive yet again and I finger tested the gimbal bearing only to find out that it was...
I have to replace some rivets on my 1984 Islander, But I do not know the size of the rivets and what type of rivet and rivet gun to buy or rent. If anybody knows, please post it here.
Thank you,Cornelis.
Ok a little history.
I replaced some piston rings, the head gasket and the manifold gasket. Also replaced is the water pump and from points I changed it to electronic ignition.
So I thought that this thing would behave and indeed she starts just fine, but after running for about 5 minutes it cuts...
I have an opportunity to buy a good running 165 hp straight six and replace my not so good 140.
The 140 is 1984. Can I Use the outdrive of the 140 (Alpha one) with the 165 or are there compatabilty issues?
Thank you,Cornelis.
I am trying to adjust the valves on this engine, but I do not know which ones the intakes or the exhaust valves are. Can somebody please give me the sequence starting next to the water pump?
Thank you,Cornelis.
