Stringer Repair ?--Doesn't Look Like the Book

I've accessed the keel stringer and instead of a rectangular shaped stringer ( fiberglass covering a 3/4 thick pine board), it looks like the foam was blown in before the fiberglass cured. The glass bows out in various areas so the stringer is sometimes about 1" wide, sometimes about 3"...

    Rotting form bottom up-1984 4winns

Is it common for stringers and the keel board to rot from the bottom up? I took off part of the sole and the ski well floor to see what things look like. The sole and top areas of the stringers/keel are perfect (except for the area I know leaked), but the lower parts of them are wet or black...

Cast stringers to preserve floor strength?

I have water in the bottom of my boat (and in the bottom hull) that is rotting stringers and lower wood areas. The floor itself is bonded well to the foam and very strong and stiff, except for the areas that leak due to a lousy repair job the former owner did. So far I have cut out about a 2 x...

    Water in hull-just dry out?

I have water in the hull, which is full of foam. Can't I just open some area up and let it dry, then seal it? Does the existing foam have to come out?

Also, I cut out a section of the floor (sole) to access the bottom and stringers. To re-install the floor area, do you install a...

    Filling 120 Merc outdrive fluid

I did my first outdrive oil change-it's a 120 model (IL4 engine), 1984. I drained the old, pumped in 1 qt into the bottom hole using the quicksilver pump kit, but nothing has come out the vent hole, which is way up on the outdrive, not on the lower unit. Manual says it takes 28 oz., but doesn't...

What's this tube for? (carb to fuel pump)

Have a 1984 120 hp merc, in-line 4. There is a plastic tube hanging loose from the carb, running down the side of the engine. Previous owner says it was always like that, and the boat also hesitatates when accelerating from an idle. I noticed that there is an open port on the fuel pump with a...

1 stringer soft, floor is ok--fix stringer?

I have a 16 foot 4winns. The stringer under the driver's seat is soft, but the floor looks ok. Can anything can be done without tearing everything up? Sould I leave the stringer alone until the floor gets bad? Will spraying anything in there help?

    Buy 1984 4winns or 1987 Baretta?

I probably will chose one of the following boats-which would you recommend. Both have good compression. Assume similar mechanical conditions and comments:

1984 4winns, 120hp mercruiser I/O with freshwater cooling, Alpha outdrive?, 16', looks nice. $2700.
-OD transom leak...

How to check 1984 mercruiser sterndrive

How should I check a sterndrive on a boat I'm considering? I looked at the fluid (clear) and pushed up and down on it to look for transom flexing, and test drove it. Is there anything else to consider?

Thanks

Boat sat outside 4 rainy months-rot likely?

I am considering a 1984 4winns boat that was sitting outside for the last 4 rainy months. It is hard to see underneath the deck, but is it likely there is rot down there? It was garage kept before that.

Milky oil, ran it, then clear-problem?

A 140hp in-line 4 mercruiser I am looking at got a bit overheated due to the stern impeller going out. Compression (cold) in all cylinders was 145-150 before we ran it. 2 weeks pass, impeller was replaced, and I checked it out again. Oil looked a bit milky before the run, buy afterwards it...

Buy this boat, or are problems too much?

I'm looking at a 1987 17' Baretta with a mercruiser I/O engine (4 cyl, closed cooling, 165 hp). Found no soft spots in hull or transom, and tried to do compression check but could only get guage firmly into first plug hole (150psi) due to adjacent parts (heat exchanger?). Boat had the following...

Ran 5 minutes without water-engine damaged?

I test drove a 1984 140 hp, 4 cylinder I/O mercruiser yesterday. Idled out about 4 minutes, ran hard about 1 minute and noticed smell. Temp guage was pegged so I shut it down. Some smoke was rising off the engine and it was sizzling.

Owner re-started it a few times during...

5500 RPM Mean Motor Running Well?

115 HP Johnson, 1978, on tri-hull 17' Glastron. I get 5500 rpm, but top speed is only about 32mph. Does the fact that it runs smoothly at 5500 rpm mean all is well with the motor? I realize top speed is also determined by the boat shape, weight, etc., but it seems too slow.
