    Ignition Troubleshooting - 1978 700

Would I have better chances of success with Sierra Marine? I'm thinking they at least have a lifetime warranty.

    Ignition Troubleshooting - 1978 700

Okay, switching green wires around from a known good circuit/switch on the switchbox, I get spark with all three coils. And alternating the Violet, White, and Brown Trigger Wires, connecting them to a known good circuit/switch on the SwitchBox, I get spark with any of those three Trigger...

    Stuck Steering

Just an idea. Maybe others had thought of something similar. In my searching the forums, I hadn't seen this as a suggested fix for a stuck steering shaft - the shaft that the steering rod passes through - properly known as the steering tilt tube. . I wrapped them with clear tubing so the PB...

    Ignition Troubleshooting - 1978 700

Yeah, much looked good before I started touching things and the insulation started crumbling off the green corroded wires. 😁 . I'll definitely be going through all the wiring and making repairs before I attempt to start it. Same with the whole fuel system. .

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Lower unit oil must have been typical gear oil and not marine gear oil, because about a half a teaspoon of clear water came out when I removed the plug. Oil was black. The plug has a magnetic tip, but I didn't find any metal shavings on it or in the oil. . I haven't started working on it yet. I...

    '67 Holiday 18' - Make it Usable

Yeah, we go to a place in Astoria called Buoy 10. It's a blast of a fishing opportunity, but need at least 12 gallons a day if we want to always be where the fish are at any given time of the tide cycle. I want around a 20 gallon.

    '67 Holiday 18' - Make it Usable

I'm just posting an update. I've been enjoying my StarCraft. Perfect beater for my interests. The Suzuki I had on it went out in around June and I shopped for a used replacement. Knowing how hard it's been finding parts for the 84 Suzuki, I did some research. I asked myself, why isn't there a...

    Original 1967 Styrofoam?

Much of those pieces fell off when I had to break the blocks in half to get them out of the 30" hole I cut. The larger styrofoam blocks are solid. But yes, a project down the road would be to pull it all up and replace it. .

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Yeah, it just seems easier to temporarily move one wire than to move the coils. I'd put things back of course. But if when I do that, and #2 then has spark, I know it's not a bad coil.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Rather than taking the coils out to swap them, I could just temporarily move the green wire from #1 to #2 to verify if #2 coil is good, correct?

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Yeah, my research is telling me this same lower unit is used all the way down to a 30hp. And the 70hp was the biggest motor they used this lower unit on. It does look really small. . Google keeps giving me different answers for this motors weight. Sometimes it says 250 or so, sometimes it says...

    Original 1967 Styrofoam?

Yeah, I keep my boat out of the weather. The floor is sturdy and dry. Surprisingly, (knock on aluminum) I haven't found any leaking revits. After I rebuilt the transom 4 or 5 years ago, every time I took it out, not even a drop of water in the bilge. This last four day trip was in semi rough...
