Repower again 2+2 yrs & models

I agree having had both. Probably my best 2 engines, both bought new, were a 1972 Johnson 125 V4 cross flow and the 1970 something (forget the exact year probably '78 or '79) Mercury 850, forget which 3 or 4 cyl., probably cross flow too. Cross flows liked their fuel but otherwise were pretty...

77 Merc 500 pumping but no tell tail

The tell tale circuit is normally off the exhaust manifold cooling water jacket (on my engines). Next time you run the engine, put your hand on the water jacket cover and see if it's cool to slightly warm. If so, fine. If hot you have a clog in that cooling system. Since cylinder heat is...

Thanks everyone! ‘84 115 TOP rebuild going!

" Impact driver?" I have a farm and have been working to keep semi-antique tractors and implements in usable shape. I can't tell you how many "situations" my air and electric impact tools have gotten me out of....It's amazing....you have a fastener that won't budge with all the manual force...

shaft is stuck in the crank shaft

I'd try something like that before I would go with a complete breakdown...but I'm lazy.

    Upgrade motor.

If you prop it right you ought to be able to leave a wake like is in my Avatar. Essentially the same hull as yours, 2002 Merc 90. I was right at 50 MPH when I put my cell phone over my shoulder and snapped this picture. I think I was running a 24P ballistic SS prop.

Preparing / cleaning lower unit mating service after impeller removal - 5hp 2 stroke

Having broken (snapped) bolts and ripped out threads on fasteners when I was a teenager and starting out on my association with fasteners, I haven't had any problems since then. I started to pay attention to what I was working on and whether it was a shallow, small (1/8") diameter thread in...

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Poppet valves are pressure activated....by increased water pressure coming from the water pump with higher engine RPMs. If the engine has no thermostat, it has free flowing channels for "limited" circulation at the lower RPMS. If these passages are blocked by corrosion or foreign objects, then...

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

If that's a 15' Tri-hull that's a good match. Back in the early '70's when they were popular, lots of folks had that length with a 60 HP. Could pull a skier with a couple of folks in the boat at a good enough speed for everybody to have a good time.

How do i get this out?

One of my granddads had a small farm and liked for me to help him plant when that time would come. On one occasion we were heading back to the house for lunch and he stopped at 2 Dill plants. He took a whiz on the tall one. Said he was fertilizing it......must have been as it was about twice...

    Tips for Removing Fuel Pump.

Agree....like water pump impellers....since you went to the trouble to inspect it, why shouldn't you replace it?

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

On the ignition problem, I'd loosen every connection from/to the packs and once slightly loose, work the wire back and forth which will shine up the contacting surfaces.......then re-secure the locking device....screw-nut. If the (ground) wires under the screw have corroded terminals....which...

What's the word on the street about current Mercury models?

I think a lot of "adventure" TV shows have a certain degree of "setup" to keep the audience's attention. Some of the stunts they add are real jokes.

What's the word on the street about current Mercury models?

Reports from owners on here and elsewhere indicate that Tohatsu makes a great engine.....Maybe that's why Merc. decided to use them. There was a TV show on Dish (when I had them) that was filmed in the La. brackish water area, SW of NOLA and there was mention on there about their reliability...

    No tach,no charging

Er ah.....my Mercury manual says that if the Stator yellow wires aren't connected to a circuit....rectifier and load, or rectifier/regulator, the Stator is damaged. My guess is that the voltage rises to a very high voltage (with no load) and you have an arc-over in the Stator.....we addressed...

    No tach,no charging

The AC voltage on the yellow wires is RMS.....Root-Means-Square. It is about 70% of the Rectified and filtered DC peak. 12.3V/.707 = 17.4. Pass it through some diodes and load it down due to resistance in the charging circuit and you wind up with 14.5V which is the tops for most circuits of...

    No tach,no charging

From my memory: Yellow is AC input from Stator. Grey is tach output to tach gauge. Small red is operating power and large red is battery charging power output.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

The OMC 3 was Loop Charged which made a BIG difference in fuel consumption plus a redesigned, streamlined, lower unit. In looking at later sales brochures I notice that the Merc. 75 has 3 carbs and is also Loop Charged.....don't know if the earlier model 70 with 2 carbs was a Looper or not.

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Follow the fuel input hose to the fuel pump attachment point.....look at the hose below it.....I see what looks like that connection is bad.....replacing the hoses is a good place to start. Wiring seems to be in good shape. Usually new kits in the carbs with a thorough internal cleaning with...
