    I read his I tracked Chris's pan problem and inspected mine for that problem. I have the cast aluminum pan and the fit was perfect. I guess I'll find out soon :)

    Found the culprit. 25 year old part. Not sure how this would happen, except potentially age. Cover and seal have even replaced. Pan was in excellent shape. internal components look virtually new.

    I'm gonna try :) I've got a new cover w/seal and gasket on the way. if replacing seal works, great. If not, then replacing cover. Will also inspect pan carefully for corrosion, but seems wise to leave it alone if it's not the problem.

    thanks for all the info! the Mercury timing cover was $279. Amazing if these are interchangeable. for $45, I would replace the cover, which I believe means removing the oil pan cover as well. Is there a way to match my REMAN serial number with that year engine, or does it just go by year?
