Advice on Buying a Jon Boat

Agree with this. You can probably get on plane with just you, maybe one more with that 15. If out "with the family" just expect to be puttering around. Definitely water test with people on board to make sure it runs ok and can perform like you want/expect.

ok, so real world testing incoming...this is a lot of text, but whatever. My 25 hp merc died suddenly (again). 2 years ago had similar symptoms, turned out to be the stator. Information provided to chatgpt: 1. Weak spark to both cylinders, unable to jump gap on tester 2. DVA voltage on both...

1997 5.7L thunderbolt ignition. Slow crank

Didn't compare all the specs, but have dealt with MM a few times for tech advice and buying other parts--these guys know their stuff and have great customer service. If everything was close in terms of price, I wouldn't hesitate going with them.

    3.0L comparability

I can't remember offhand the details about input shaft length and older inline MC-1s, but that might come into play at some point...

Constant drain of 1 of 2 batteries

Yeah that's why I said "regular", would have to be a relay trigger with the relay near the batteries, which is what it sounds like. A stuck closed relay might do strange things

1997 5.7L thunderbolt ignition. Slow crank

Personally think that if you're going used (rolling the dice) you'd be better off with a truck engine. Even abused, the block has an easier life than a marine engine.

1997 5.7L thunderbolt ignition. Slow crank

I'll say I wish i didn't install a relay on mine and just wired it like OEM. Many connections have given me trouble, although my boat is...special.

Constant drain of 1 of 2 batteries

Can't be a regular battery switch, it would take too much high current wiring

1997 5.7L thunderbolt ignition. Slow crank

As mentioned you didn't need to mess with a cam. You need a marine fuel pump. Then yes just switch your stuff over. Wiring will be a straight swap as well. Vortec isn't any harder since you'll be pulling heads and manis anyway.

Constant drain of 1 of 2 batteries

So no connection between the batteries? What's a parallel switch? And stbd is the draining battery? Seems like an odd setup.

1997 5.7L thunderbolt ignition. Slow crank

Wow, was looking over at michiganmotorz... things have become crazy expensive! 1. I personally wouldn't sweat getting a higher mileage engine. My 4.3 had at least 200k when I pulled it 5 years ago ($180). If the compression is good, you're set for a while at least. This would at least give you...

Oh, I misunderstood you. Thought you meant that if he went vortec would need an electric pump. Yeah, my 2001 4.3 doesn't have a port either. What would drive the pump? Assuming the cams changed...

Constant drain of 1 of 2 batteries

Ok, so no switch. You have the 2 batteries wired in parallel, with no separate house/boat batteries, but only 1 is draining? That doesn't make sense. Or do you have 2 completely separate systems for house/boat and only 1 is draining? Assuming scenario #2. Disconnect the neg (how many wires?)...
