Engine backfiring through throttle body when trying to accelerate

Just an off the cuff question.....in the case of my engine with a distributor, how does the ECM advance or retard timing when you have a fixed rotor rotating around making contact with the "points" on the dist cap? I'd think you couldn't advance or retard too much otherwise the rotor won't be...

Engine backfiring through throttle body when trying to accelerate

Just found a post where some folks treat cap/rotor like the water impellar....replace it every couple years.

Engine backfiring through throttle body when trying to accelerate

It's not surging at idle, only when I add a little throttle. Otherwise the engine sounds/feels normal when at idle. Last year when I addressed my fuel pressure issue, I replaced all the vacuum lines. My vac readings came from inserting the vac gauge right at the port on the intake manifold...

Engine backfiring through throttle body when trying to accelerate

My bad on the vac readings...... those numbers I posted were in cmHg. To revise them.... At idle around 12 inHg. When surging, 7 to 12.5 in Hg. That is one thing I didn't check yet when I got home last night. But cap, rotor, wires were replaced in 2023, plugs replaced last season after...

Engine backfiring through throttle body when trying to accelerate

The engine was experiencing some backfiring through the throttle body when trying to accelerate and at times sounded like it wanted to stall out at idle. I replaced the tstat on Friday and fired it up, got it up to temp, cracked the throttle a little bit...maybe 800-1000 rpms for a few seconds...

    Exhaust manifold/risers/elbow question

I've been digging around the forum to what info there is regarding how long manifolds last in non-fresh water environments. I've got a 2005 Chap 256SSi with the MX 6.2 MPI s/n 0W061713, Bravo 3. I've owned the boat going on 6 years and bought it with 160 some hrs on it. It was a fresh water...

Equivalent to Kodiac 10in slip on rotors

Is there is an equivalent slip on rotor to the Kodiac Dacromat 10in/5 lug slip on rotor for 3500# axles?. On Kodiac's site, they are selling for $105 a pop. https://www.kodiaktrailerbrakes.com/Kodiak-Trailer-Disc-Brake-5-Lug-10-inch-Slip-on-Replacement-Rotor_p_753.html

Dark colored drive shaft and black looking grease

Thanks for the feedback guys. Just wanted to be sure nothing weird was going on.

Dark colored drive shaft and black looking grease

I mean grease. I put/use the same grease used for the gimble bearing on the shaft and splines. Previous seasons, the grease still had a green tint to it. These past 2 seasons, it's been really more black with no real green tint to it.

Dark colored drive shaft and black looking grease

The last 2 seasons when I pull the outdrive for winterizing, to me it seems that the drive shaft has changed color and gotten darker. Also the grease is really black compared to the fresh grease color of green. I just don't seem to remember this in previous years. Is this normal or is it a...

    Bizarre IAC reading

Yeah, 40 knots per GPS. Speedo doesn't work....some debris got into the pickup hole on the drive and I haven't been able to unclog it.

    Screeching Noise from Frankenstein 383

To me it kind of sounds like something is being squeezed through a small opening under high pressure. The sounds makes me think of operating a hydraulic piston like on a backhoe...the high pressure hydraulic fluid flowing into the cylinder through the control lever can sometimes make a...

    Bizarre IAC reading

To my knowledge, there's been no reprop done. Original 24P props....I believe. When I did the shakedown cruise, I did go WOT and hit 40 knots. This is how it's been since I bought the boat back in 2020 with 168 hrs (now 358 hrs). Granted I never took note of RPMs at WOT, but I've always done...

    Bizarre IAC reading

Thanks for the additional insight. It's the ECM-555. All the boat info is in my signature, but I think there have been issues with it displaying....2005 Chaparral 256 SSi - MX 6.2 MPI s/n 0W061713, Bravo 3 With regards to #3, if I were down a cylinder or 2, would I be able to hit max speed...

    Bizarre IAC reading

I think I would agree. Took the boat out for a shakedown cruise. It ran great. At least I have a baseline. Thanks for all the insight.

    Bizarre IAC reading

What you say makes sense, but if the IAC is fully open, why is it idling at the normal expected RPM value.... 600 some RPMs? I would expect higher RPMs/high idle. Also, then, why is the IAC being commanded to be fully open?

    Bizarre IAC reading

Yeah, I don't have sensors installed on the exhaust paths. I wonder if I could add them provided the wires/connectors are on the harness. The engine was running on muffs.

    Bizarre IAC reading

Now that all my fuel pressure and module fun is over, I decided to quick plug in the computer to see what all the parameters are. Idle is normal but my IAC is at 99.98%. I just realized the one screen shot of the parameters shows IAC at 0%. It was at 99.985... I swear  I also finally...

    High Fuel Pressure

Finally got everything cleaned up and put back together, pulled a new vacuum line down to the regulator just for the sake of having a new line. Fired it up and the fuel pressure at idle is right where it needs to be. The engine also just sounds better/stronger at idle. Thanks for the all the...
