New to omc bought I think 78

Sold my 86 OMC in 2005 since parts were hard or impossible to find. Plus I did not like that big rubber gasket in the transom.

    Gas tank access panel

IMO it would be better to be removable in case the sender dies or a hose needs to be replaced.

    Convertible Top

    AFAIK that is not possible.

Tried to start without distributor cap on. Killed something.

That coil has nothing to do with it turning over, the starter does that. I would check all the fuses first.

    Convertible Top

Our 86 SeaSwirl had a place at the top of the transom to store the cover that snapped to the windshield. Which was good because I like to stand up when cruising and only put it on when raining.

IME and as far as quality goes, Four Winns is in the middle of the road.

That is what I keep telling myself, even when my shoulder hurts.

Transferring fuel from truck to garage to dock to boats (PITB)

I have been hauling gas to the boat in 5 gallon gas cans for a few years. We use around 20 gallons per week in the summer time. It is a hassle, but have pretty much gotten used to it.

    Box Anchors?

I have never used one, but half the lost anchors I find when the lake level drops are box anchors.

    fuel mileage

    At my normal cruising speed of 32mph I get 2.5 gal/mile or 12 gallons/hour. My last boat was a 4.3L in a 18 foot cuddy cabin at 28mph and got 3.5 gal/mile.

Cross reference mercruiser V belt part# to auto parts store?

I would just purchase Mercruiser replacements from my local boat mechanic. He is a good guy and I like to throw him some business now and then.

Pontoon boat vs. Open Deck for Lake - Total newbie

At a bare minimum a used boat needs to be test driven by someone that knows what they are doing. I have had friends purchase a used boat because it looks nice and got burned.

Trouble pulling skier out of the hole

I had a 4.3 in a 18' Seaswirl cuddy cabin and certain people were hard to get up because they had their ski pointed straight up and were basically fighting the boat. For example my sister who was a little smaller than the guy you mentioned, but was very strong was very hard to get up. The ski...

    Boat submarining question

When I first owned a boat and would let friends drive my boat, I let an adorable woman in a small bikini with big boobs drive my boat. We had been cruising for 10 minutes out in the middle of the lake with no boats close to us and all of a sudden she lets out a really loud scream, "Where is...

    Boat submarining question

You need to understand the limitations for your boat. IMO driving a boat is harder than driving a car, but a lot of boaters seem not to realize that.

How much gear lube loss after fluid change?

Agreed. The person you had change it was probably in a hurry and didn't wait for all the air to work it's way out.

    confused and frustrated

I'll bet Regal will be of no help on a 30 year old boat. Chaparral wouldn't help me with mine when it was 1 year old, they told me to contact the dealer.
