    Delco EST High Idle

Took a couple of pictures of the shift interrupt connection to the distributor. I've also attached a picture of the wiring diagram that came with the new distributor. The one difference I see is that I don't have the "coil to ignition splice lead". I might have overlooked the significance of...

It was last fall when i trashed it but I don't recall it having one.

    Delco EST High Idle

The previous owner had one of those auto MSD ignition setups in it. I ripped it all out and replaced it with the EST. I didn't modify anything around the shift interrupt. I'll check my wiring in the morning and get back to you.

    Delco EST High Idle

The deets: 1987 5.7L, Holley Carb (fresh rebuild), Sierra Delco EST Distributor, New plugs, wires, starter, fuel pump. The problem: After setting the timing to 8 degrees BTDC and removing the timing harness the engine dies. When I start it back up (with timing harness disconnected) it runs...

    Flame Arrestor w/Fuel Vent Connection

Thanks Paintman! It sounds like I'll be able to connect directly to the carb but if not this might be option B.

    Flame Arrestor w/Fuel Vent Connection

There was a Holley 4011 in the Seloc but I didn't look to see how far back in the past it was used. This engine had been gone through at some point in the past 10 years or so and had the carb, intake and ignition updated.. Thanks Scott! I noticed that port on the carb too and had been...

    Flame Arrestor w/Fuel Vent Connection

I've scoured the web and have seen people mention doing something similar. Have any pics to share?

    Flame Arrestor w/Fuel Vent Connection

Not handy, but the carb is a Holley 4160 (600 cfm). Just had it rebuilt over the winter.

    Flame Arrestor w/Fuel Vent Connection

Working on a 1987 5.7 and I noticed the previous owner hadn't connected the fuel pump vent hose to the flame arrestor. The flame arrestor in the boat has a couple of ports for crankcase venting but no port for the fuel vent line. They sell a bolt on attachment but I have no idea how exactly it...

    Engine struggles to turn over

"HEI" was used in a generic sense i guess, perhaps incorrectly.. Anyway, I actually installed the Sierra Marine EST distributer. The starter was also from Sierra..

    Engine struggles to turn over

Just closing the loop here for anyone facing similar issues in the future. Replaced the starter and it fires right up!

    Engine struggles to turn over

I was able to turn it manually when I was trying to find top dead center during the distributor install.

    Engine struggles to turn over

I'll definitely recheck the cables. Battery is brand new. Plugs and wires are new as well... I hadn't thought about the drive. It seemed to be engaging fine last fall when I had the engine running (albeit poorly).

    Engine struggles to turn over

Replaced the fuel filter yesterday. The motor ran "ok" last fall after I replaced the distributor but it wouldn't stay running for long, which is why i had the carb rebuilt.

    Engine struggles to turn over

I actually replaced the cables last fall when I began seeing signs of a problem. I'm wondering if I should just replace the starter. It's an '87 engine and could be the original for all i know. FWIW - I did get the engine to fire up briefly using starter fluid but it wouldn't stay running...

    Engine struggles to turn over

Hey all, So I had my carb rebuilt over the winter and now that the weather has warned up had the opportunity to reinstall it and not having much luck getting it to fire up. Take a look at the attached video and tell me what you think. Could it be the starter? Could it be the timing? Note...

    Patching floor

The project boat I'm working on had some soft spots around the ski locker so I've cut the flooring back, but not all the way to the hull. My initial plan was to sister a 2x2 to the stringer nearest to the side of the hull to support the new flooring but now I'm wondering if I should just cut...

    Swim Platform Bracket Repair

Ok, so the project boat I just acquired has a bent bracket on the starboard end of the stern. Previous owner must have backed the boat into something but there is no visible damage other than the bend bracket. Anyway, should I remove the bracket and replace it using the existing holes or...

Replace MSD Ignition with Self-Contained HEI Distributor

Hi All, I just purchased an '87 Cobalt project boat with the Merc 260 which the previous owner parked after having trouble with the MSD ignition. The seller of the boat (friend of the owner) suggested replacing it with a "self-contained" HEI distributor but I'm not entirely sure what a...
