    What size jets?

Just finished a complete rebuild on an 85 'Rude 90hp...FINALLY! The cylinders were bored out .030 over with the exception of the #3 cylinder which is .040 over. The current high-speed jets are 56c. I've been told by a couple of mechanics I'll probably need to go up in size on the jets to...

Which tachometer for an 85 'Rude 90hp?

I'm looking at getting some gauges for my boat but have no clue which tachometer I need to get for my motor. I have no clue how many "poles" I need :confused:

    What size prop?

I'm nearing the point where I need to start thinking about a prop for my 85 'Rude 90hp. My boat is an 1860 aluminum flatbottom with humongous float-pods on the back. Top end speed is what I'm more concerned with since the float pods help get the boat on plane. Boat isn't too terribly heavy...

    Easy alternative for checking compression?

I'm nearing completion of a powerhead rebuild for an 85 'Rude 90hp. I just have a few things left to do (install t-stats, rebuild carbs, install cylinder head, etc) but before I tighten everything down and get it all put back together, I'd like to know if my compression is good. If the...

    A little quality control help

Spent a good portion of the weekend putting my powerhead back together (85 'Rude 90hp). Installed 4 new pistons, wrist pins, wrist pin bearings, rod bearings, crank seals and gaskets. Had a couple of questions though. When I put the two halves for the crank case together, I used "2B" gasket...

    Removing upper and lower seals

Is there an easy way to remove the upper and lower crankcase seals? I have a seal puller ("hook" type) but I can't get any leverage on the crank head assemblies. I'm guessing there is a better seal puller I can use?

    LU pressure/leak tester

Can someone point me in the right direction to find a tester? My LU is leaking oil so I ordered a seal kit but before I tear into this thing I want to replace the fill/drain seals then pressure/leak test it first.

Change entire water pump or just impeller?

85 'Rude 90hp. Been sitting for a few years. Should I replace the entire water pump kit or would replacing the impeller be sufficient?

Tips, tricks, hints, suggestions of things to come

This weekend I hope to start putting my powerhead back together for an 85 'Rude 90hp. I wound up ordering a rebuild kit off of eBay that included new pistons, wrist pins, wrist pin bearings, circlips, rod bearings, t-stat kit, crank seals and a gasket set. I've been reading my OMC Service...

    Paint color

Can someone tell me what color paint is on an 85 'Rude 90hp E90TLCOS? I think it's the anniversary blue but I'm not sure. It doesn't seem like it's that dark of a blue so I wanted to make sure.

    Cleaning cylinder heads

I have an 85 Rude 90hp I'm rebuidling the powerhead on. Just got my cylinder heads back after having them resurfaced. The "cup" area of the head has some metal dust in em from the milling. Whats the best way to clean that off? I want to get the carbon off as well. Can I use water to rinse...

    Different Wrist Pin Bearings

I was out taking a closer look at the pistons and what-not for my 85 'Rude 90hp (E90TLCOS) and discovered 3 of my rods have different wrist pin bearings. They appear to be one piece or a caged bearing. The other rod has individual needle bearings with the upper and lower thrust washers. Are...

    Should I replace this piston?

Pulled the pistons out of my motor over the weekend. I know I have to replace one, but there is another one I'm unsure of. The grooves that run along the outside of the piston are worn down to the point they're almost gone. Is this something I should go ahead and replace since I have the...

    Decarbing pistons not installed

Just broke down my powerhead to replace one, maybe two pistons and to swap out the bare block. While I have it all apart, I'd like to clean up the pistons that I'll be putting back in. Is there anyway to de-carb the pistons when they're not installed? 85 'Rude 90hp by the way.

    Can I resleeve the cylinders?

I picked up an 85 'Rude 90hp over the weekend for the low low price of $Free.99. The catch was, I had to rebuild the powerhead. I spent part of Saturday and most of the morning Sunday taking the motor apart down to the powerhead. Here's the "sitch". The number 2 piston is fried. The guy I...
