1979 Johnson v4 115 hp head getting hot

the water inlet holes on the gasket lined up correctly with inlet from t stat housing? should be opposite the inlet tube on the head, and tab pointing outboard either side

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

the valves in the intake manifold must flow both ways i thought, and they call them "drain" valves. I know the ones on each side from the bypass covers (check valves) flow out but not in, and the ones by the intake manifold flow in but not out, but the ones on the intake manifold have to flow...

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

how long did you run it before reading those temps? I can imagine in 25 degree weather it would take a good 10 minutes to warm up fully. the t stats not seated properly with the cork gaskets pinched or stuck open. that misfiring could be a bad coil grounding out, or the sensor assembly...

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

no problem! yea that interlock can be removed. the old ones didn't even have one, of course very dangerous. i had an 18hp fastwin (1970 model) on a light 14' grumman. shifter detent was very worn, as a result i unintentionally knocked it into forward, went to the beach with my cousin, came back...

Stuck at MAX revs 2000 50HP Johnson

the one on the right could very well be from an early 56ci 70hp! i'd be very interested to know what jets were in them, especially the high speeds! im sure i have a set. been going through some parts for a 2001 135hp upcoming rebuild project and came across a whole bin of them i had collected...

    1983 70 HP Carb issue

what do you mean "TDC when the carbs start to open"? the carbs start opening with the first hash mark on the throttle cam, although on these to do it properly you really need a digital tach to get a consistent idle out of it and good throttle response. needs .010'' gap as fazt mentioned.

glad you got it sorted! On the starter spool: is that retention rod there under the head of the interlock? ive seen them missing lots of times. if the interlock isn't retreating, the cam underneath can get worn and kinda sticks. hit it with some dry-lube and see if that helps.

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

i hear you on the syringe test... but as i was saying i think the intake manifold recirc valves go both ways. i had just done a 90hp and 110hp and all 8 of them flowed both ways, but the one by the bypass cover port side went only one way.

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

what made you think all 4 recirc valves failed? usually its the lines that are clogged, not the valves. you can clean the valves out if they are dirty. I believe the valves by the bypass cover only allow fuel/oil out but not in, and on the intake they are free both ways. i assumed they shouldn't...

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

is this a VRO/OMS motor? looks grey like an 84' model so i'm guessing premix. fuel pump mounted correctly? reed gaskets mounted correctly? i cant see how recirculation lines would prevent the crank case from pulling fuel out the carbs.

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

i'd 100% agree with searyder... get a new gasket! the fibers get compacted, making it much less effective. it needs to be new, for sure. those t stat housings should be planed down on a flat surface to make sure they don't leak, and sealant applied. i'm suprised 2 gaskets didn't leak there! if...

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

yeah nothing wrong with Permatex 3 other than it being really messy. 100% fine to use. i stocked up on cans of the original BRP gasket sealing compound once my local parts guy told me it was going to be discontinued. its now NLA as i'm sure you found out. really any gasket stuff thats...

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

the screw you were pointing to in the pic is to be removed, exposing the HIGH SPEED orifice deep inside, with an identical setup on the other side of the carb for a total of 4 high speed jets. now, once the carb bowl is removed, you will see a second SET of low speed jets. something like size...

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

you would be doing yourself a big disservice by not rebuilding the carbs. takes me maybe 45 minutes removal to installation! the throttle cam needs to advance BEFORE the throttle butterflys move, in a nutshell. as long as they are closed at idle and just begin to open when the timing mark is...

Upper Water Tube Grommet Replacement 6hp 1985.

so the older manuals (i'm thinking prior to say 1981) had a sneaky habit of mentioning what gaskets need sealant in one tiny paragraph in the beginning of the powerhead rebuild chapter. and even then , its sort of ambiguous as it goes into which types of surfaces need it, "unless specified" or...

1984 johnson 90hp carb leaking fuel out air cleaner

carbs: don't boil them! just use a syringe and alchohol to clear the passages out. sounds like your idle jets might be clogged. has 2 little tiny air bleeds that need to be clean, all holes behind those core plugs clean but those are large. did you not touch the carbs at all after the rebuild?
