Sustainable Electrical Setups for Older Motors

.6 ohms off the two main leads to the rectifier OL on both to grounds. The multimeter leads zero'd out so there was no resistance to subtract

Sustainable Electrical Setups for Older Motors

I couldn't seem to find a straightforward guide online to test them which seems a little odd. I can go out and test pretty easily though. If I understand correctly though. 1. Touch multimeter leads together to get a baseline reading 2. Test resistance between the two yellow stator wires that...

Sustainable Electrical Setups for Older Motors

I have two voltmeters so could split them between the two, but the switch would show those levels if I needed to see them. Presently I just have the one battery in the system, but I have a spare truck battery and another marine battery to use.

Sustainable Electrical Setups for Older Motors

I have a 1975 Evinrude 75hp that puts out 12.8V-13V to charge the battery, I'm told this is to be expected from the older motors. My only prior experience was with a 93 johnson that had an all in one regulator/rectifier. My current setup is the little universal 3 wire. My main goal is to have...

    Low Charging, possibly incorrect wiring?

I saw a guy do this on youtube! Super intriguing but not looking to push my luck lol! The net positive of this investigation was I noticed my positive battery terminal connection is broken and that definitely could have led to some serious issues without it being addressed.

    Low Charging, possibly incorrect wiring?

That's actually great news, my fear is a melted stator which I experienced last summer from a poor rectifier connection which is why I'm much more paranoid about it. I don't run a ton of stuff, speedo, voltmeter, small stereo, eventually a tach and all only while running really just keeping LED...

    Low Charging, possibly incorrect wiring?

Yeah that's what I'm saying, but on looking at the setup a second time, I see that the second rectifier contact is bridged over to the other stator wire. I'll double check that there's continuity but doesn't seem to answer any questions. Really hoping it's not the stator because it's just an...

    Low Charging, possibly incorrect wiring?

Changed it because $25 on amazon is cheaper/faster than testing it. Still getting 12.9-13V.

    Low Charging, possibly incorrect wiring?

1975 evinrude 75hp, bought from a mechanic who did a lot of great work with it. Starts, runs, all the good stuff no issue, My dash voltmeter and USB charging both show around 12.9V-13V for charge while at WOT. I don't have a tach to verify the RPMs at this stage. I swapped the rectifier...

    Manual Tilt/Trim Swap between motors

I do take your advice quite strongly. Bath motors are 50 years old, but one has been fully gone through. The 75hp from 76 has had the following done Carbs cleaned and rebuilt Chris Carson fibre reeds with reed blocks lapped and gaskets replaced. New coils, wires and plugs New cdi power...

    Manual Tilt/Trim Swap between motors

Looking at buying either a Johnson 76 75hp (75ELR76D) or a Johnson 74 85hp (85ESL74B) both manual trim/tilt. If anyone wants to weigh in on that decision I'll put details below, but I'm mainly interested in seeing if I could swap in my power tilt/trim from my busted J70TLETS. From looking over...

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

I'm checking dry weight online. My 3cyl was set at 238 and the 120hp was at 308 I believe.

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

Having done a full electrical rebuild I can say that I'm pretty particular on the condition. One frayed rectifier wire cost me 5 weeks of a season and $800 in parts (damaged stator, blown pack, cracked coils). Clean mainly just says someone has taken care of it, or it was recently in a shop. But...

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

Yeah I've gauged across a pretty broad area to understand pricing a bit better. Theres outliers but most are still cheaper than used marine shops. Still looks like 1500-2000 will get something that runs and has a reasonable service background. The hp seems irrelevant which mirrors my experience...

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

Yeah I worked in a pawn shop for a long time. Very familiar with the game. I miss living in the sticks because everything was cheap or a trade.

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

Well seems like the general consensus is that 120hp is too large and too risky. Which is fine, hoping I'll find something more reasonable. I still don't understand people selling a motor but think someone will pay $1500 if it can't be run. Again only reason it was even a consideration was...

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

I didn't put the transom plate originally no. If there was any sort of give I wouldn't even consider it but even with the 70hp on it I can't get any movement on it. Some photos for reference. My logic is that, I can get a couple weeks this season to see if it's even feasible. Worst case I sell...

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

Not sure, the weight diff from the 70hp that was there to this is 230lbs to 300lbs.

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

Replacing my blown motor with another Johnson. So far my local market options have yielded a lot of questionable options, a lot of motors that haven't been run in years, or are currently in parts (but want full price up front). Or home rebuilds at ridiculous prices. There's a guy who has an 85...

    Is my motor toast?

I'm not even sure how I'd go about repairing the block or where I'd go to have the work done. The consensus from some mechanic friends is that if it was a crack it'd be salvageable but with a hole it'd require the same budget as buying something else.
