    Chattering in out drive

I live life dangerously. LOL Just an update here. I pulled the outdrive tonight and found everything to initially look good. Gimbal bearing is nice and smooth, no play. U joints are tight and well greased. No signs of water intrusion (corrosion) that would suggest the bellows were leaking or the...

    Chattering in out drive

I'll add here, that my understanding is that the gears themselves are pretty damn tough, and its odd to have them damage themselves especially under light duty and good lubrication. I'm leaning toward some kind of bearing failure. I'll update here once i've got it figured out.

    Chattering in out drive

As usual Bondo, I'm afraid i'm gonna have to agree with you. Fact is you just don't know what the damage is until you taker her apart and check it out. -guess I know what I'll be doing in my spare time this week.

    Chattering in out drive

Turns really very smoothly. The oil level is just as shown in the picture which looks good. No signs of water. It’s been a couple years since the gimbal was changed or checked, so I suppose that’s possible. U joints were checked at that time as well and they were good. The shimmer in the oil is...

    Chattering in out drive

It was trimmed almost all the way down. No rotation or bouncing of the prop and it would free spin while the motor was running. I’ve run into the issue with the dog clutch bouncing like that before and that doesn’t seem to be the case here. Based on the photos I assume it has plenty of oil and...

    Chattering in out drive

Well its that time of year again. And no time like the present to find out what's going to fail this year... Luckily this time it showed its ugly face before I got on the water. While testing the motor for the first time on the muffs this season, it started and ran beautifully for about a...

    Looking for oil drain hose

Good afternoon, I’m trying to find an oil drain hose kit that will make my oil changes an easier, cleaner job. I see the kits offered on line and even in Oreillys but I’m not confident in what fits my engine so I don’t want to buy the wrong part. Mine is a 1981 sea sprite with a mercruiser 140...

    Outdrive leaking oil

I picked up Mystic JT4 outdrive oil at the local parts store and it’s quite a bit stickier than the Lucas so I went with it but did add some Lucas zinc +

    Outdrive leaking oil

Just wanted to update. I replaced the upper and lower oil seals as well as the cap bearing and gear sets. Pressure tested everything at 12psi for 12 hours and I’m ready to refil with oil and test. BUT wanted to first ask what everybody prefers as far as outdrive oil. Historically I’ve used Lucas...

    Outdrive leaking oil

In addition to finding the seal leaking, I took upper gear assy (name?) out and found the bearings and gear were trashed…. I guess I know what I’m doing today…

You would think…. But it had new oil last season

    Outdrive leaking oil

Possibly even the small o-ring between the two halves? That’s my favorite case scenario…. I was hearing a rattling from the top half and removed the inspection plate to find that bearing was worse for wear as well

    Outdrive leaking oil

Good afternoon everyone. I had the boat out at the lake this weekend and it ran very well yesterday but this morning acted did like it had a pretty bad misfire to the point that it actually died on me a few times while coming back to the dock. I found that there was a spark plug wire that had a...

    Need second battery pointers

I have an isolator that I’ve wired in; and I don’t really want to hack up the factory harness… if it was as simple as moving a terminal or two around I was gonna split it up…. That’s kinda where and why I’m stuck

    Need second battery pointers

I'm installing a second battery ("house battery") in my '81 SeaSprite w/ Mercruiser 140. I'd like to use that second battery to basically run everything but the starter and ignition system. Meaning all pumps, blower, lights, radio, fish finder, ect. I was hoping I could just move the red/purple...
