    A video tells the story. The needle jumps all over at RPMs over 1800, but it pulses even at idle with a noticeable “miss” you can hear.

    1981 SeaSprite Mercruiser 140 with Alpha drive, converted from points to EST two years ago. Recently when I get RPMs over 1800 the tach will begin bouncing as it works its way up to 4K. Simultaneously there is a rattling noise almost like valve train heard from the engine. (Possibly unrelated?)...

    The water tube was the issue. She’s working now. New order of business is poor performance over 2k RPM but I’ll start a new thread for that.

    I don’t have a thermostat installed on the engine, never have; it’s not right, but it’s never been an issue. I bring up the water tube because it’s happened before. When installing, the copper tube ends up being pushed too far up into the upper and doesn’t seat properly in the impeller housing...

    You can really find great deals on them if you take the time to look around. I’ve got everything put back together now. I’ll pressure test the top and bottom individually, then the two halves back together. -hope to be back on the water by next week

    I did a lot of part number cross referencing and found deals on eBay. This got all the gears, bearings, all the internals. I did have to take my bearings to a shop to have them pressed on, so I’m not counting that. I actually put together a spreadsheet with Sierra # references if you’d like me...

    I got out cheep. Just over 300 for everything including oil, seals, tools and all.

    I’ve opted to repair. Every bearing, seal and gear has been replaced. Preload is set and it will go back together today. A little oil and luck; we should be back on the water soon

    Updated photos. Looks like the gears grenaded, most likely due to lower bearing failure. I’m gonna have to rebuild the whole stinking thing.

    I received the replacement NOS mercruiser cap and bearing set with shims last night. I came with good illustrations and specs for setting preload and assembly. -looks like quite a process but it’s a long weekend so I’ve got time. I’ll follow up

    I’ll invest in a dial toque wrench -good to have anyway… I have a manual as well so I’ll dig into it. This is actually, I believe a Pre-alpha 81-82 vintage
