1987 Mercruiser 454 Loud 'Popping Noise'

How'd the maiden voyage go? Interested in the Sniper install myself.

    4.3LX & Weber Carb Service

One other thing... when I was having the issues, I had removed the divorced choke's heater and just left the mounting point on the manifold as I assumed it was just a spot for the heater to mount too. There is a small hole (pilot?) that the heater lines up on, in it. Is this just a hole to...

    4.3LX & Weber Carb Service

Just trying to lessen the heat soak. Maybe it'll be better with the floats adjusted properly and the rebuild done on it. We'll see.

    4.3LX & Weber Carb Service

Update... Well I pulled the new carb off the engine. I then put the old carb back together with the divorced choke and reinstalled it on the engine without the 1/2" phenolic spacer and Vroom!!! She fired up right away! I let it run up to normal operating temp then shut it down and checked the...

    4.3LX & Weber Carb Service

Yeah, the carb is the only thing changed from last year, and it ran pretty good then. It's likely the issue... I hope. Thanks for the info.

I did all that you said minus the hot engine due to it not being ale to start. I'm suspecting the valve in cylinder #3.

Spark is there and I checked the timing. It hasn't fired at all this spring, just backfires. I disconnected the12v to the fuel pump when I checked the compression and no backfire then.

Another update... I bumped the float gap from 7/16" to 1/2" and mounted the new carbs top plate to the old carb and tried it. That seemed to stop the flooding but still not starting. I do get the odd backfire though which it hasn't done before. I did a compression check and found the the #3...

    4.3LX & Weber Carb Service

Yeah that's what I was thinking about the fuel pressure, but it's a merc low pressure pump and has worked fine and never had any issues with it before. I dunno, maybe my new fuel pressure guage is wrong? The carb is a new knock-off one from eBay. Maybe I'll strip everything off of the new carbs...

    4.3LX & Weber Carb Service

So here's an update... stupid me tried to pry off the top plate with the air cleaner stud still screwed on and warped it and so I ordered a new carb. Btw, the old carb's floats were way out of spec as some of you had suggested. I set up the new carb's floats to spec and installed it with a...

    4.3LX & Weber Carb Service

No, not so much... if I try and start it within a few minutes after it's been up to temp she'll start right away. Throttle in neutral and just bump the key and it goes. If it sits for a half hour or so then it'll have to turn over for a few seconds to fire.

Replaced the coil, plugs and wires, and the distributer cap a few seasons ago. The timing and idle air/fuel screws done at the same time and also a compression check.

    4.3LX & Weber Carb Service

Good to know that's what the squirting is from. I'll check the floats during the rebuild. The spacer is going to be added to help with lessening the heat at the float bowls and evaporating the fuel. My only problem with it will be the linkage to the temp coil as it stays with the manifold. I...

    4.3LX & Weber Carb Service

So I'm trying to dial in some issues on my 1996 Mercruiser 4.3LX 4bbl Weber carburetor. The motor has about 800hrs on it but not sure about the carb. I have a new Fuel/water filter, and recently a new fuel pump installed. So what I'm experiencing is that it runs a little rough at 1st start up...

Engine starts, idles for 10 seconds then dies

Update: Hooked up my DMM to the fuel pump and it showed 10 v when starting (as expected) and 14+v after it started. I checked around the O.P.S. and wiggled the connector and no change in voltage. As soon as I touched the Purple/yellow spade terminal that goes to the fuel pump, the voltage...

Engine starts, idles for 10 seconds then dies

I'll deal with the oil pressure switch circuit 1st and go from there. Hopefully just a bad connection or faulty switch. Then on to rebuilding the carb.

Engine starts, idles for 10 seconds then dies

My 15 HP Kicker runs off the same pickup tube and ran fine wide open for 3 hours to get back to the launch so I think it's good.

Engine starts, idles for 10 seconds then dies

Yup I agree 100% I'll be checking that too. The more I think about it that's what it sounds like. The fuel leaking into the carb may just be another separate issue. I'll look into both though.
