Hello, forgive me for asking a question that I’m sure this has gotten some discussion in the past. It seems like my web searches have turned up a variety of different opinions. Well, I’m hoping to get some advice from folks that have had real life experience running a similar motor than mine. I...

Flush cooling system 71 25hp Johnson?

It does not have a flushing port that I know of. It’s only being used in fresh water but I know the previous owner used it in salt occasionally. I’ve owned it less than a year. I will run it in a bucket with the thermostat out then reinstall . Thanks for the response.

Flush cooling system 71 25hp Johnson?

I’m replacing the thermostat in my 71 Johnson 25hp. Is there anything I should do before changing it? Is flushing out the cooling passages necessary? If so, can you please explain the process? Thanks in advance for any feedback. Much appreciated

71’ 25hp Johnson still rough running

Well the thermostat appears to be stuck closed. Tried sticking it in boiling water and nothing, then cold water and no change. Guessing that probably hasn’t help matters. Hopefully nothing got messed up with it running hot, if it was in fact overheating. Im guessing a motor with a bad...

71’ 25hp Johnson still rough running

Thanks. I ended up cleaning the points and checked gaps and they are set to factory specs. I did noticed one of the coils appeared to be a little off . It was rubbing against the magnet/flywheel causing a little wear. I adjusted it ever so slightly so it’s flush to the machined area. Hopefully...

71’ 25hp Johnson still rough running

Hello, I have been working on this 71’ 25hp Johnson for awhile now. Weird things have come up as I’ve been fixing it up. I recently discovered a ground wire on one coil was installed wrong and wore against the flywheel and broke at the connector. I fixed the connections and re-routed them so...

Hello all, thanks for the replies to my other posts. Well I finally seem to have gotten this old Johnson running good ...fingers crossed. It’s a pull start and I’ve heard that it’s not super difficult to convert it to electric start. Any recommendations in this process? Those of you that have e...

Sync cam throttle on 71 Johnson 25hp

Thank you all for all the responses. I’ll keep the cam adjustment where it is for now. I cleaned the highspeed jet really well and held it up to the light and it looks super clean. Especially after break cleaner and compressed air blew through it. The miss at high speed feels like a quick...

Sync cam throttle on 71 Johnson 25hp

Hello, I’ve been trying to adjust the cam roller position in order to line it up to the two marks on the cam of my 1971 25hp Johnson. I read the service manual for my motor and did the recommended steps . I set the throttle to where the roller sits between the two marks on the cam and loosened...

Running 1971 25hp Johnson at higher elevation lakes +3500’

Great thanks. I’ll give it a go soon and see how it runs up high. I just figured out what one issue that was causing it to run poorly lately, after running flawlessly the last few weeks. After changing the fuel lines, tank, primer bulb, cleaning and rebuilding the carb, checking the jets( high...

Running 1971 25hp Johnson at higher elevation lakes +3500’

I’m assuming it’s the stock jet but I’ll pull the carb in next few days to confirm. I just ordered a rebuild carb kit and plan to replace the seals soon and I’ll check then. I’m guessing the jet is stamped? If not, then I’m not sure but guessing it’s original size. Attached a few pics of the...

Running 1971 25hp Johnson at higher elevation lakes +3500’

Hello, I am the proud owner of a 1971 25hp Johnson. I am planning on using it to fish higher lakes in the Sierra Nevada’s soon and was told by a local mechanic that the motor may have issues idling and running good once I get up in elevation. He mentioned I may need to re-jet the carb or the...

1971 25hp Johnson what part is this....?

Thanks the picture I sent is definitely #49. I’m not sure how I missed that while looking at the part diagrams. The spring looks to be functional. I’ll take a closer look tomorrow to see if the noise is for sure coming from the lock out and not the shift lock #42 . Thanks again for the help and...

1971 25hp Johnson what part is this....?

Hello, I cannot locate this part on any of the part diagrams online nor in the service manual I own. I noticed the plastic arm hits the starter when I pull the starter cord and makes some noise. I recently replaced the pull cord and I notice the noise. I cannot remember if that normal when I...
