56 Johnson Javelin, new battery but won't do a thing

Hi everyone. I started on here in 2012 restoring a vintage boat and engine. I finished it but after a couple years of being too busy to use it, I have decided to gift it to a wonderful family with three kids who practically live on lake water and sunshine. I was getting it all ready to give to...

How do I remove 56 Johnson Javelin carb??

I am stumped as to how to remove my carburetor so I can use the carb kit I ordered. I removed the fuel line, but I'm not sure what to remove regarding the throttle linkage (see picture "F"), perhaps the cotter key? And I am absolutely confounded by how to access the two nuts holding the carb to...

56 Johnson Javelin upper carb needle HELP

I apologize for starting a new thread but I had no replies on my other thread (which had started with a different topic). I'm at the end of my rope and ready to sell this motor if I'm too stupid to figure something this basic out. Here's the scoop. I had to remove the upper and lower carb...

Got spark and good compression but lower cylinder not working

Hi everyone. If you've followed my saga before, I restored a 1956 Johnson Javelin and it ran great. Last summer I did a rewire on it to get the start button and kill switch to the front of the boat instead of the rear. LONG story and many posts, but finally successful. When I took her out for...

56 Johnson Javelin one cylinder not working

I spent the summer working on this motor, if anyone has followed my saga of the starter solenoid and rewiring process, I finally got it to start and run. But the motor wouldn't run full power when I lake tested it and it sounded noisier and just "off" compared to how it used to run. WillyClay...

Does anyone know the part number for a 56 Javelin starter? Where would you recommend getting one from and if you know, what's the average price? Thank you.

Hello again my forum friends. It's hard to believe but it's been 5 years since I sought out help from you all to restore my old boat and motor. I could not have done it without this forum and I'm forever grateful. I had zero motor/boat knowledge before this experience so I credit you. Now I...

Need help getting ID and info on this boat?

I purchased this boat, trailer and motor last summer simply because I needed the motor for a boat I already own. I want to sell the boat and trailer locally and I'm just throwing out the price of $300 (it floats fine, I used it last summer and no holes, no problems) but since I haven't had any...

How to ship a vintage gas tank?

I was wanting to sell a couple vintage gas tanks online and I don't know how to go about the shipping process. From what I've seen on Ebay, sellers list a shipping price so I assume they are using either USPS, UPS or FedEx but I don't know what the restrictions might be on an item such as this...

    18' 1969 Offshore V restoration

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration "however I will soon fool you all with glossy photos from 50 ft away on a sunny day." Hahaha! Love it! Thanks for the reply and the great information, I really appreciate it! My boat is only a fourteen footer, not sure the length of yours but how much white...

    18' 1969 Offshore V restoration

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Hi, just popping in here after reading all your posts about your refurb of this grand old boat. You've done a fabulous job!!! Don't let the ol' DMV get you down; you haven't come this far to have a pesky thing like government paper-pushers stop you! :) I'm...

Replacement sheer pin for '56 Johnson Javelin prop

I was switching out props and can't find the sheer pin. I called the local boat repair guys and they don't carry any replacements because they don't work on old motors. Since it just seems to be a standard rod, do they sell something like that at a hardware store? What would you suggest? Thanks!

    Stern light question

I just got a "Jetson-style" stern light and unlike the original stern light on my 1965 boat, which has wires coming directly out of the pole bottom, this has the solid base with two holes. Am I correct in assuming this plugs into something or were there wires on there that have been cut off for...

    '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem

Re: '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem Ok, here's the latest (are you sick of me yet??) Thought I'd stop by the boat junk yard/marine repair place 20 miles from here and see if they had any old props that would work. The guy there found this white one, while I was admiring the...

    '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem

Re: '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem Uh, I don't think the prop is supposed to look like this...with black rubber squeezing out like melted cheese. Shear pin was intact and fine, so diagnosis is spun prop, yes? At least the boat mechanics will be slow this time of year.

    '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem

Re: '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem Well, here's the final voyage for the season. My brother from California (not the stubborn one that refuses to take a picture in the old boat) was in town and wanted to go out for a spin so together we got mom in it and took it out a little bit...

    '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem

Re: '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem Drumroll...............we have "pee"!!! Must have not had it lined up properly in the water tube, that's all I can think of. So happy when I saw that water spraying out of the back (and I did run the garden hose up and through the water tube first...

    '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem

Re: '56 Johnson Javelin Shift/Throttle problem Keep thinking about this...it's so hard to get everything lined up and reinserted when putting the LU back in, so I'm wondering about the water tube. Attaching two pictures here and wondering if there is anything missing, such as a the "pump...
