    Reeds?

Maybe I am trying to do too good of a job on it. I like doing things once. Too bad there isn't something that dissolves gaskets

    Reeds?

Biggest part of working on these old motors is is cleaning off the old gasket material. One set of reed blocks took me about 3 hours to do primarily because of the 50 year old gasket material. Does anyone have any good tips for removing old gasket material?

Best years for 70-75hp Johnson/Evinrude outboards

Is the 2cyl 50hp a looper or crossflow?

    Reeds?

Found reed pedals on ebay. Didn't realize I needed 4 of the 4 pedals and 4 of the single pedals. Already had 2 of each so got 2 more. One thing I learned on these motors is make sure you have the parts before you tear something apart. Any little thing can boat anchor these outboards. I ran...

    Reeds?

Yeah, I have the gaskets so if the reeds are ok I can put it back together.

    Reeds?

Inconsistent idle and warm engine restart is difficult

    Reeds?

Is the only way to check reeds is by pulling them out and looking at them or are there tell tale things that indicate they are bad or broken? I have a 1974 135hp Chrysler.

    Tillotson TC-5E float needle valve

I had the boat out Wednesday. Tweaked the low speed mixture screws to 1 1/8 and settled on that. Runs ok. Better warm starting. Sometimes doesn't idle perfectly but I think I might be done messing with it. Hopefully I can get out out on the water again soon to confirm. Thanks everyone for your help.

Best years for 70-75hp Johnson/Evinrude outboards

Everything I have read says a looper is a better design. more efficient, less wasted fuel, crossflows push more raw fuel out the exhaust with each stroke

Best years for 70-75hp Johnson/Evinrude outboards

Thanks, great information. Is the 1977 Johnson 70 hp a loop charge outboard? The parts diagrams show them with flat top pistons. That could make them a superior design.

Best years for 70-75hp Johnson/Evinrude outboards

Thanks for you input. I have heard they are some of the best outboards ever made. I know at some point they started using a VRO pump so you didn't have to mix your own oil and used less oil at low speeds so it didn't foul plugs as easily. Just not sure when they started doing that.

Best years for 70-75hp Johnson/Evinrude outboards

I am considering switching to a boat with a Johnson/Evinrude 70-75hp 2 stroke outboard. Are they pretty much all the same from the 70's to 2000"s? If not which era is best and why?

    Tillotson TC-5E float needle valve

Thank you! Definitely noted. And if this does not get the outboard to run well I guess it means there isn't much else to do. I think I'm getting close enough now that I'll just tweak the idle screws out a 1/4 turn and see how things go. Thanks again for the help.

    Tillotson TC-5E float needle valve

One nice thing about tweaking the mixture screws is I should be able to do it at home in the driveway. I messed with them a lot last time out on the water. I'm going to mess with the mixtures screws in my driveway and see what happens. Especially now that I'm feeling more confident about not...

    Tillotson TC-5E float needle valve

So, what does it mean if the motor is hard to start when it's warms? Otherwise running good. Right now I'm right around 7/8 turn out on the slow speed screws. I think I might be so afraid of fouling I'm running to lean. Here are the plugs from about 4 hours out on the water mostly cruising...

    Tillotson TC-5E float needle valve

Someone advised me a few years ago that if you get a Chrysler outboard to run decen then just run it instead of constantly tinkering with it. Maybe I'll just pull the plugs and see what they look like.

    Tillotson TC-5E float needle valve

Ok, had the boat out today. Ran it about 3 hours. It's running pretty good now. No plug fouling all day. I think switching to the L82C conventional plugs is the key. I don't plan on running WOT. Plus I used a 1.5mm spacer to keep the plug away from the piston. I'll pull the plugs soon post pics...

    Tillotson TC-5E float needle valve

Well, the inlet needle with the rubber tip does not fit into my carb. I put it in and it leaked a lot. Wow, I have been waiting for the last 6 years for a cheap little part that turns this motor into a boat anchor. I wonder if this is it. Hmm, How can I make this inlet needle seal? Would a tiny...
