Cables manufactured just 10 years ago will require a bit of fitment much less a 50 year old boat. You may need a new helm to go with the cable

Plastic has no place near an engine. It doesn't survive, and you can't recycle it
You wouldnt feel it, because the advance kicks in sooner than a mechanical advance. for example, on the 3.0 4-banger, you set timing at -2 with the shunt. however at idle, you will see the unit at about 10 degrees BTDC.
