Max hp for a 1983 Gregor Seahawk 18 CC?

Anyone know what the max hp motor would be (should be) for a 1983 Gregor Seahawk 18 CC tinny? (Having a hell of a time finding that info online; current model on website just says "100hp") If it helps, I'm thinking of looking at one, but it's got a 140hp OB on it and that sounds overpowered--as...

    Mercontrol question

Re: Mercontrol question If you have the MerControl I think you have and that I have: It has cams and swing arms inside made of soft metal that bind and eventually wear out or break. I have had to replace many of my internals (usually not too crazy expensive a job). Where in San Diego are...

Stupid questions about ignition components, 1978 70hp 3cyl

1978 Mercury 70hp 3 cyl. I am awaiting a new set of ignition coils, everything else is in place and wired up on the powerhead (trigger, stator, switchbox, rectifier, internal harness; starter and battery power and ground, though ground currently disconnected at battery). I'd like to get...

    High temperature epoxy?

Looking for a high temperature epoxy / repair compound--putty or pourable does not matter--to fill, drill and retap a threaded hole in an aluminum powerhead. Only need a little quantity. I know there's J B Weld "High Heat." What else do you recommend that is readily available (as in, can pick...

1982 Mercury 70 runs then stalls and wont start back up HELP!

Re: 1982 Mercury 70 runs then stalls and wont start back up HELP! Larson70, I am also in the mid-70's to late-80's 3 cyl Merc club. I have a 1978 70hp. What you describe is exactly what went on with my motor over the last season or two (including it becoming increasingly crotchety and my...

Anyone ever add an anode inside OB water jacket?

I read somewhere that certain Yamaha et.al. outboards come with a zinc anode inside the water jackets, presumably to protect the block and water jackets from corrosion. Got me to thinking, anyone ever add an anode to an old outboard? Maybe something like a pencil anode accessible from the...

    Can a 1975-76 65hp powerhead be adapted to a 1977-79 70hp motor

Up in the air regarding whether to rebuild the powerhead on my 1978 Mercury 3cyl 70hp, or to find a replacement powerhead. I see many more 65hp 3 cyl powerheads available than I do 70hp 3 cyl's. Far as I can tell they are largely (maybe entirely) the same as far as block, crank/rods/pistons...

1978 Merc 70 3cyl; powerhead stuck ("gooped?") to exhaust plate

Trying to remove the powerhead on my 1978 Mercury 70hp 3 cylinder. Stripped the powerhead bare (carbs, starter, all electronics/wiring, fuel lines, bracketry, etc.) . Removed the lower unit to make sure the driveshaft doesn't bind. Got all 8 powerhead stud nuts off (one rounded and dremeled)...

OMC control, 1985 Force OB...control cable options?

Guy I know has an OMC control (I'd say, late 80's or early 90's vintage) and a 1985 Force 85hp outboard. Local boat places are stumped as to what control cables will join the two. Any ideas?

How would you have handled this?

So my daughter and I pulled into the launch ramp area after a morning of fishing the bay. At the dock was a guy in a 12-14' tinny; 25hp Johnson (late 80's vintage? 2 cylinder with the one-piece cowl) with the cowling off. He tells me it quit peeing water out of both the peehole and the...

2000 Johnson 130; good or not? Watchouts?

Interested in a 2000 Sea Hunt Triton 172 with a 2000 Johnson 130 hp outboard. When it comes to boats and outboards, anything newer than 25-30 years old is "new" in my book :D Based on my research, the OB is NOT a FICHT, fancy fuel-injected, computer-controlled, or any of that...it's a good old...

Anyone lower floats in carb to eliminate bogging?

Did a carb rebuild by the book on my 1978 Mercury 70hp 3cyl. New needles and seats, too. Did not change a bogging issue I was having. After reading some threads on motorcycle forums, I tried lowering the floats. With carb inverted, spec was 11/16" from carb body to bottom of float, I went to...

Carb needle and seat; choose metal or rubber-tipped needle?

Need to replace needles and seats in the carburetors in my Mercury 70hp 3cyl 1979. Given the choice, should I go with the OEM needle and seat set with the old-fashioned all-metal needle: (representative photo) Or the Sierra set with the rubber-tipped needle: (representative photo)

"Clearview" inline OB fuel filter; anyone use one? Good? Bad?

I've been using those white plastic-bodied, polyester-screen inline filters on my outboard. Now, those clear-bodied inline OB fuel filters with the replaceable filter elements (like this Sierra product, there are at least three other "brands" out there, probably all the same exact thing)...

Need a recommendation for a new primer bulb

Gunk in my filter: Inside of the who-knows-how-old fuel lines looks OK: Less than 6-month old Quicksilver OEM bulb, not so good: So please specifically recommend me a good primer bulb (manufacturer and part number) you have personally used, that seems to hold up to the E10 and the UV and...

Bryce Canyon UT area for summer vacation, anyone know or live in that area?

Wife's looking to road trip it with the kids to the Bryce Canyon area for summer vacation. Found open spots at a campground called Singletree in Torrey, UT. Lots of Nat'l Forests there it seems, what are the must do's / must see's around there? Fishing opportunities? Thanks.

Not supposed to shift OB into reverse when not running?

Maybe common knowledge, but news to me... Is it true you are not supposed to shift an OB into reverse when it is not running? (On a related note, is this maybe why the "nubbin" on the cam that moves the shift lever in my MerControl is all worn away?)
