So ya I reached in with a hook and finagled the pinion gear around and got it out. Woohoo! I don’t see any obvious signs of wear or damage to anything, except for the water pump housing. Are there any certain parts that I should just replace just because they’re 30+ years old? The silver thing with the blue is I’m guessing a bearing that the whole works rides on? It feels smooth and tight. The bearings on the drive shaft seem good too. The one in the case for the drive shaft I haven’t had a good look at it yet. Is there a seal that goes around the shift shaft that should be replaced?

A complete replacement of the waterpump is a normal maint. item. Your waterpump upper is pretty rough. Much rougher that any ones I have replaced.

What does the “ water pump upper “ refer to? The housing? I have a complete pump kit on order as well as a gear case seal kit

Jim, If your engine is like my Johnny 150HPV6, the Waterpump consists of (in order from bottom) a gasket, stainless wearplate, Impeller w/ oring, plastic pump upper w/ Oring, plastic water tube w/a seal. All should be replaced as a maintenance item. Don't forget the gasket sealer, silicone to hold the Orings in place and some grease on splines and seals.

Mercs, in contrast have both waterpump upper and waterpump bases, as well as a wearplate and two gaskets. That is why I referred to the OMC pump as a water pump upper. I had hoped for less confusion, vs more.

This is what I’m getting. I think it covers everything? The gear case is off of a 60 hp VRO. It matches up to my E-tec 40. I only had to change the water pump housing and the shifter rod.

You might want to fill all the nicks in the old Paint with a Spot Putty, as those nick/paint chips will really look nasty with fresh paint

Thanks for checking in gents. I did use some spot putty and got it painted up. I have everything I need to get it back together except time! LOL A few weeks ago I got to work on it and the first thing I did was stick a screwdriver thru the driveshaft seal. DOH! So I ordered a new one and haven’t been able to back to it.

I recently did up a Tohatsu M18d ....it got new everything except the cover and casings . I stripped all the paint off it as the previous owner ( my brother in law ...one of them ...she has 8 brothers ) had brushed on house paint .
Having learnt ...way to slowly ..about the prep thing this time I paint stripped ,wire brushed ,dremmeled and sanded the whole thing. I etched primed ,spray puttied and spent feckin hours on it .
I bought metallic paint at 50 bucks a can (x3) and at the last point I decided not to go for 2k lacquer instead using some stuff that was supposed to be as good ...and it sorta was but there are a few small patches where it has gone a bit opaque .....well I can see it , others are being kind 😆. Bit of a bummer but .....🙄

So my neighbor has been on a fishing trip all week. He came over yesterday frantic that he busted the skeg off his brand new mercury, well it’s about 3 years old now, but he was asking me about welding it for him. I looked at it and I think if it was mine, I would clean up with a grinder/ sander, put some paint on it and a new prop and go fishin. What say yous guys?

prop repair or new one solves the prop problem ....the rest belongs to a welder..... time and money permitting.

I only had a chip break of and they wanted 3-400$ for my repairs so I just went JB weld (later painted)

this one is more severe of course and neeeds a full rebuild :-(

Can I weld it up without taking the whole thing apart? Obviously I would keep the housing cool thru the process

Mercury used to sell replacement skegs. I had one welded onto my gearcase some years ago. Some welders wanted me to drain and disassemble the gearcase because of the welding heat. Luckily, a local welder with more experience and skill, trimmed the gearcase and new skeg to match and welded it for me. I did not need to drain or otherwise disassemble the gearcase. It looked and worked perfectly.

The quality of the welder is the key.

BTW- I think Jim Dirt needs some help with his skeg. That scratch or crack from the bottom gearcase bolt looks suspect.
