Last October, the transmission in my tow rig (1999 Suburban C1500) started making bad noises, so I parked it. Besides my boat, I also use the truck to tow my race car. The truck had a stock 4L60E in it, and after dropping the pan, I confirmed that it was dead.

Initially I thought I'd just sell the truck and look for a newer 3/4 ton truck, as I have wanted to upgrade from a 1/2 ton for a while. But....after looking at prices, I decided I'd be keeping my C1500 and just replace the transmission, lol. Instead of going back with another 4L60E, I decided spend a little more to upgrade and swap to a 4L80E - the transmission that came in the C2500. I had a local shop source a core, perform the rebuild, and also install a towing upgrade package.

My brother and his son came up at the end of December and we performed the swap. Besides the new trans and torque converter, I had to modify my driveshaft, reflash the computer, replace the trans cooler and lines, and do a little re-wiring, but now I have what I think is the most important part of the 3/4 ton package - the stronger transmission. I'm hoping this thing gives me many years of worry-free towing.

With things warming up in TN, I'll be de-winterizing the boat in the next couple of weeks and we should be on the water by the end of April.

Great upgrade. I have one of each in my two trucks. The 4L80E is MUCH more desirable.
What was involved in getting the trans module reflashed?

Friday, I got in my last boat ride of the season before putting the boat away for winter. That means project time. So Saturday, I pulled the axle and springs out from under the trailer to go through them and start installing electric trailer brakes.

I got the axle cleaned up and welded on the brake flanges, then sanded and primed the axle for a new coat of paint.

You are REALLY going to enjoy not being pushed around by the boat anymore. ;)

I really should do this on my trailer.... I just know that I probably shouldn't trust electric brakes in the salt. Those electric over hydraulic setups are expensive... but so is a wreck.

You're telling me... I just bought a boat on a triaxle aluminum trailer with EOH brakes and the actuator is bad... The actuator alone is $800

For salt water, look at the Tiedown Engineering disc hydraulic surge kits. They are set up for that.
Drum with electric is fine for freshwater, and much cheaper.
But the point is that even my little 1750 with a 4 cyl weighs close to 3,000 lbs with the trailer. That is a lot to stop with a pickup.
Spend the time and money like Todhunter. ;)

And that's the other problem... do i spend the money on a trailer that is still marginal for the load to begin with or just upgrade everything. I intend to scale the truck/trailer then boat and see what I'm really dealing with... I fear I may actually be at the trailers weight limit.

Ahh. I think this needs its own thread, then. ;)

Matt, if you've never taken your rig over a scale, you might find it interesting. I live near a truck stop that has a CAT scale. I downloaded the app to my phone and I scale all of my projects. Truck by itself, and then "reweigh" with the trailer to determine tongue and axle weights.

This is something I have been wanting to do. I think there is a CAT scale nearby. I'm curious how much weight I added with the rebuild. I think I was pretty heavy handed with the resin.

Got all the suspension sanded, primed, and painted today as well. Hope to get it back together this weekend. I'll be replacing 2 of the shackle bolts due to wear and will be installing new shackle bushings.

Those drum studs DO NOT come torqued from the factory. Be sure to crank them in tight.
I lost a wheel from not knowing that. The nuts were tight, but the studs somehow backed out.
