    1989 Johnson TJ50TLCEC No Spark

Here is the Sierra conversion kit: https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-99213 What is the benefit of the conversion kit verses just replacing the power pack? I'm really wanting to learn more about diagnosing these things - partially because I enjoy learning...

    1989 Johnson TJ50TLCEC No Spark

The only thing I have been able to rule out so far is the ignition coil tests as it should (though it does have some cracks and I'm replacing as a preventative measure since it's only $30 or so) and the rectifier is definitely bad as evidenced by a bad wire that was damaged almost all the way...

Charge coil is the smaller coil with only two wires. Correct? If so, that tested out with correct ohms of 550 brown to brown/yellow. I did see that Sierra makes a conversion kit, but didn't realize what it was for. Is that when the 'trigger' becomes a thing and why I am not seeing the trigger...

    1989 Johnson TJ50TLCEC No Spark

I was saying they look correct when compared to pictures of OEM parts off marineengine.com parts manual. But they do not line up with the colors listed in the CDI manual that I posted a screenshot of. If you mean online as far as the CDI manual, I've got that, but not the same wire colors I am...

Agree. But where do I find correct resistance readings for my specific unit. it seems what I found on CDI manual doesn't line up with my wire colors unless I am completely misunderstanding...

And yes, I have unhooked the black/yellow stripe (kill switch) wire unhooked.

Hey all. Having problems testing for correct issue on this motor. I've looked up what I believe is the correct page in the CDI manual (screen shot included), but none of the wire colors seem to match up. I have also checked wire color verses pictures of original parts from parts manual and my...

The FB Marketplace ad is still up, so, here is the link where you can see some of the pictures of the boat. Maybe you can see the drive clearly enough. https://www.facebook.com/share/1EBMUN8Qv8/

It's almost like you have been around this a bit. LOL My understanding is that this one is a Ford 302. But I will take pictures when I can and post.

1994 Four Winns 5.0 OMC Cobra didn't get winterized

Oh nice. Well, that explains a little more. So...any suggestions on where to price a long block as previously recommended? Still looking into buying a complete boat with a bad hull and swapping. Any suggestions I should consider with this particular boat if I come across options for a swap...

1994 Four Winns 5.0 OMC Cobra didn't get winterized

So, I would obviously have to go ahead and replace the freeze plugs. Would I have to do anything to the exhaust ports where the manifolds bolt up? Sorry if that's a dumb question. I don't really understand how that all gets tied together to send the water back out the exhaust at this point in my...

1994 Four Winns 5.0 OMC Cobra didn't get winterized

The hull is in immaculate condition. It's been covered pretty much it's whole life and only has 28 hours on the engine. This is just a "someone was a moron and didn't winterize a nearly brand new boat" (even though it's 30 years old). Everything in this boat is original and looks almost like it...

1994 Four Winns 5.0 OMC Cobra didn't get winterized

I do realize this is most likely the case, but - because I am hard headed and like to salvage everything and prove what is and isn't bad without making assumptions - how would you go about proving the block is bad or good if you can't see any physical damage?
