1972 Johnson 65 selectric lower swap

The old oil looked fine when I changed it but who knows if it was garbage before that and the previous owner changed it recently to hide the fact. Thank you for your advice and sharing your knowledge. When I have time to pivot back to this boat I'll verify voltage first.

1972 Johnson 65 selectric lower swap

I'm not balking at a 5 minute check, I'll do it before I drop the lower. But I have to drop the lower anyways to do the impeller. And I'm not sure how it could shift into reverse if it wasn't getting power to both solenoids. I'm under the impression that no power is forward, power to neutral...

1972 Johnson 65 selectric lower swap

It functions electrically and appears to work perfectly on muffs. In the water when there's a load on the prop it sounds like it's grinding in reverse. I'm not sure where else to look but in the lower unit. The motor wiring is all in nice shape, it's got fresh type c oil. I'm not going to dig in...

1972 Johnson 65 selectric lower swap

Thanks for the info. I was hoping it was a more elegant design than that. Sounds like a jack plate will be in order if I can remember the slipping gear

1972 Johnson 65 selectric lower swap

I'm on the Wisconsin/Illinois border on the chain o lakes. Yeah, I haven't dug into the lower unit yet, I'm still restoring the boat I got it on but it's a long shaft and a 15 inch transom so it would've been nice to kill 2 birds with one stone. Was hoping finding a complete lower from a short...

1972 Johnson 65 selectric lower swap

I've got the aforementioned Johnson that runs like new but has a weak reverse. I haven't opened it up but it seems to function correctly electrically but sounds like skipping clutch dogs. It's a long shaft. My question is, if I find a matching short shaft lower can I just swap them out or are...

    Old v4 generations

Great info guys, I appreciate it. That ad was a fun read, too. It says the later ones are a physically smaller powerhead than the older so I might actually get a newer one and try to modify an older hood to fit it.

    Old v4 generations

I guess I should clarify, I'm not expecting a Prius from an old 2 stroke, just wondering if they improved much from the 60s.

    Old v4 generations

I'm finishing a restoration of a 59 Lake n Sea and I'm getting to the point where I need to find a motor. I like the old fat fifties for aesthetics but they're not practical for a regular use outboard. I had 60s Evinrude 80 on a Larson I redid but got rid of it. That motor was great, easy to...

Old Larson I.D. and floor help

I just picked up this old Larson for $50. Looks to be an early 60s 16 footer, not sure of the model, All American or lapline? My real question is about the floor .It doesn't seem to have to one like I'm used to. It has fiberglass beams (bulkheads?) Running across it ever couple feet and the...

    Lake 'N Sea Caribbean restoration/restomod?

Hi all, we just picked up a nice running 1959 Lake 'N Sea. Paid $800 for it and it runs really well except the reverse gearset seems to be stripped, which didn't show itself running on the muffs. I actually think the seller would've taken$500 but I'm the world's worst negotiator. Engine is a...

    Pier decking replacement question

Hi all, I know this is a little off topic but... my girlfriends dad has a pier that is getting a bit old. It is an aluminum framework with a 4X8 sheet of plywood in each section, and each sheet of plywood has a thin plastic sheet of some sort covering it, I'm assuming for cosmetics and for sure...
