    1968 Mercury 1000SS ignition parts

I will, but is it really low enough to be worried about? It is even on all 6 and it hasn’t run in 8 years, wouldn’t it go up a bit after a few heat cycles? Or is that something an old timer has told me that’s false? I’m honestly just wondering, I’m sure you know more than I do.

    1968 Mercury 1000SS ignition parts

I did, it’s got 105-107 on all 6 cylinders. It’s been in storage for 8 years but was put away correctly. I sprayed a bunch of two stroke oil down the cylinders and into the crankcase and turning the motor over felt very smooth.

    1968 Mercury 1000SS ignition parts

Hello all, I recently purchased a 1968 Mercury 1000SS. Serial no. 2410533 It is in very good condition but it is missing the distributor and power pack. Where can I find one? Are the SS and non-SS distributors the same? Any help with info on the motor or parts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    1968 Merc 1000SS questions

Okay, is there a way to check on the driveshaft without taking off the lower unit? I’ll make sure to check the gear lube when I see the engine, but that’s not the driveshaft.

    1968 Merc 1000SS questions

I assumed I’d need to replace the water pump and spark plugs, and rebuild the carbs, but what about the driveshaft? Why would it require inspection?

    1968 Merc 1000SS questions

Hello all, I am looking into buying a ‘68 Merc 1000SS that is for sale near me. It has been sitting for a few years, but it is in beautiful condition and was put into storage correctly. (engine was fogged, carbs drained, cooling flushed). It is in very very good condition, everything seems...

    Johnson/Mercury steering cable compatibility

The large threaded nut on the starboard side is the same as well?

    Johnson/Mercury steering cable compatibility

Hello all, I am swapping my 1976 Johnson-Javelin 85hp for a 1975 Mercury 85hp, as the Mercury is in much better condition, lighter, and a good deal. Will my steering cable be compatible with the Merc? The current cable works great and I'd rather keep it, as the current wheel/helm/cable came with...

    Late 60’s Mercury outboard weight

The stress cracks aren’t in the transom itself, they are small and aren’t a result of a heavy engine or a rotten transom. I think they are a result of the thin splashwell being stepped on when getting in and out of the boat. The cracks are very thin, and probably more cosmetic than structural.

    Late 60’s Mercury outboard weight

Yeah, I definitely don’t see them for sale often. There’s a few for sale right now that have been restored, and I’m considering it an option. Do I want to spend the big bucks? No. But do I want a reliable engine? I absolutely do. I’m thinking of buying an engine with good internals and fixing...

    Late 60’s Mercury outboard weight

This is one reason why I’m looking into older motors. I have enough mechanical experience (and time) to adjust ignition points, or tube carburetors. I do understand the advantages of and electronic ignition, but parts for those can be quite expensive and I know that old fashioned points and...

    Late 60’s Mercury outboard weight

I do understand what you mean, and I agree with you that it might not make sense in every scenario. I don’t expect to find an engine for sale right away, and frankly, I’ve got plenty of time on my hands. I don’t mind spending a few hours adjusting a carb. But please do keep explaining, I don’t...

    Late 60’s Mercury outboard weight

Yes, but I’m sure any outboard that’s been properly maintained is going to be much more reliable than what I’ve got now. I’ve literally never had a single successful outing with that engine.

This makes sense in my head…. especially due to the majority of new outboards having cams and valves and springs and such. I’ll believe it.
