Hello all, I am swapping my 1976 Johnson-Javelin 85hp for a 1975 Mercury 85hp, as the Mercury is in much better condition, lighter, and a good deal. Will my steering cable be compatible with the Merc? The current cable works great and I'd rather keep it, as the current wheel/helm/cable came with the boat. I'm assuming that the diameter of the rod at the end is most important, but I'm not sure. Most of the outboards that I have worked on have been tiller's, so I'm not very experienced when it comes to swapping an outboard with a helm. They aren't universal, right? Please let me know. Thanks!
