If you are going to hire it out, consider buying a hydraulic steering system with a 2 piece tilt tube rod. (Uflex, Seastar, Vetus, Mophorn etc.)
You can saw or cut the old cable to remove it, and use the old cables to pull the new hydraulic lines. You will not have to remove or move the motor...
I don't think this motor has a tilt tube, may need to add one or use a similar style transom mount bracket, but change the long rod that goes to the tiller bolt to something safer. I think the steering set up pictured actually needs to be moved back closer to the motor, and a proper steering arm...
Cut the steering rod /cable to get it out. Use the old cable to pull new hydraulic hoses fir hydraulic steering. Check Uflex, Seastar, Vexus. Mophorn etc.fir s complete kit. Best thing you can do to a cable steered outboard.
Maybe the tilt tube and/or the steering tube.
Maybe the swivel on the motor itself
Maybe one or both cables.
By the time you buy a new twin rack helm and dual cables and have them installed, which may require taking the motor loose and then reinstalling it, you are getting really close to the...
I just did this with an older Merc 150, I used the Hyco 1, all good. Their fitment tables did not show my engine but the Hyco model I got was suitable for almost all other 150hp Mercurys, and you are right, hoses much easier to run than cables for only a little more dough.
Remember to tie the...
Look at Seastar (now Dometic) and also Uflex to find a model that utilizes a split support rod that goes into the tilt tube.
Thereby not requiring the motor to be removed.
I just did this with a Uflex.

Try to always run ethanol free with a good stabilizer.
At the referenced Volvo Penta Global site I have tried three times to pull up the service manual for a 74GIPLKDCE, 4110145075, 1997 Volvo engine, 7.4L. It will pull up the parts and maintenance schedule, but not the service manual. When I enter the numbers for my older 5.7L it pulls up the...
Hi, just purchased a new to me 1997 Cobalt 272 with 289 hours on the meter. It is powered by a 454 Volvo with a duo prop drive. Great boat.

Transom TSK SX-C1 (gas)

I'm trying to find the year of 150 hp Mercury outboard for a friend. I have tried 4 different cross references and none of them show his motor. The serial number he has given me is OTO66527. Any light you can shed will be appreciated. Thanks
