I have a 73 85HP that i can't figure out. Am am using a store bought tester gapped at 7/16". I have been through the troubleshooting guide a couple of times and have the following results: Rectifier is new, and tests ok (just to be sure) Stator is new, generates @120 VDC at the Power Pack...
Before i put the new $275 Stator in, i don't believe i have seen an explanation of why these things go bad. Are there any test i should make to make sure that i don't fry this one like the last (new motor to me, wasn't running due to "electrical problem")?

I have a 73 85 HP Rude that has a melted Stator. Any harm in replacing a 6 AMP with a 12? I could use the extra charging capacity for another battery. Thanks!

I have recently aquired this motor and was told it wasn't firing; i am a "tinkerer" and don't want to send this off and spend a fortune to get it fixed. I purchased a compression tester and a digital multi-meter. So far, i have tested each plug (new) and could not get even a mild spark...
New to the forum, did some searching, but couldn't find definitive answers...what are possible causes of reverse 90 model 40HP Evinrude not working? How about troubleshooting. Any advice appreciated. KP
