    Winterization Question

Thanks fellas, I’ve been meaning to run power out to the “boat house” (carport) for a while now, guess this gives me an excuse to get it done asap.

    Winterization Question

Hi All, I live in the PNW where we have relatively mild winters but it does freeze from time to time, with a few weeks a year where we’ll have a cold snap with 3-4 days of sub-freezing temp days in a row. My engine is freshly rebuilt (16 hours now) and I’m hoping to squeeze a few more...

For the record the distributor with the faulty ignition module was this one...

    5.0GL-C won’t get on plane

A new ignition module fixed the problem folks. I ended up getting a Sierra Marine ignition module and installing it in the distributor I got from Amazon and now everything is working fine. I checked the timing advance with the old module and no matter how I set the base timing it always seemed...

Agreed but the module came with the dizzy so I’m going to buy the exact same one and return this one if it fixes the problem.

Ok so I replaced the fuel pump and did all the fuel system tests and everything seems to be in order on the fuel system side. I cleaned the screen on the carb inlet (looked clean) blew out the fuel line and the fuel tank vent line and there are no restrictions or obstructions. The fuel filter is...

    5.0GL-C won’t get on plane

That’s a big help, thanks. My buddy just asked me if I’d checked the tank vent yet and mentioned the mud dauber nest thing. I haven’t checked that yet and I think it will be the first thing I do tomorrow when I get home. I’ve had them make nests in the “pee line” on my kicker motor before and...

Yeah, it’s a Holley 2 barrel. The screen in the carb inlet was changed during the rebuild but it’s probably clogged again now. I have no idea how I would check the anti-siphon valve or fuel tank pickup tube screen as the tank is below deck and inaccessible. It’s like they put the tank in first...

Yeah, I replaced that little mesh filter as part of the carb rebuild but I didn’t get a good look at it yesterday, maybe I should pull the carb and give it another thorough going through before proceeding further.

    5.0GL-C won’t get on plane

Ok, another new development. I still don’t have anyone to help but when I got home from work I tried starting it again and still no good. I pulled the fuel filter and it was about half full. I pulled the line off the carb and it was dry, then I pulled it from the fuel pump side and it sort of...

Yes, everything in the carb was cleaned/replaced EXCEPT the 2 little cork washers for the idle mixture screws. My rebuild kit was missing them so I left them alone and didn’t back them out since I was worried the washers would fall apart and I’d have nothing to replace them with.

I’m solo so I can’t hear or feel the pump while I’m cranking, the fuse is good. I’ll have help on Monday which is when the pump is supposed to come so I’ll have someone to crank while I check.

    5.0GL-C won’t get on plane

Well interesting development, I went out to work through these troubleshooting steps and it wouldn’t start. It fired up for a second and then stalled and then wouldn’t restart at all. The only thing I had done so far was to replace the fuel filter and the new filter still looks dry so now I’m...

Thanks for all the replies. I changed the fuel filter last night and drained the old one and the gas looked perfect, no water and no debris. Thank you for the advance curve info alldodge, I’m going to check that next. My gut is telling me it’s the electronic advance on the distributor, even...
