    62 Lone Star Cruiseliner

After weeks of rain, I finally got back to the boat. The drain got clogged at some point so there was an unintentional leak test! Pulled the rotten floor on the open rear deck. More crazy styrofoam! Threw out 5 big trash bags of it. Hopefully the weather will be good to restart more work.

Thanks. I will check that temp requirement and hope it is warm enough. The wood is in my (unheated) garage so it is dry (except for humidity). And yes, those are packing peanuts. We pulled out 2 full garbage bags of packing peanuts! There was also spray in foam surrounding a funky half-pipe...

I have started to pull the flooring and have done a dry fit on some of the new pieces. I am know ready to use the old-timers formula to seal the pieces. Is there a temperature limitation when using it?

    62 Lone Star Cruiseliner

After a couple of false- starts, I have found my bounce-back boat. A wildfire in 2018 melted my LS El Dorado before I completed my restoration… I kept looking for an Eldo, but they can be tough to find out west. So in the fall of 2020, I found a LS Cruisemaster that seemed to be a likely...

Removal of alluminum boat fiberglass top cap

Noted that my experience doesn’t necessarily translate to others, but it appears that these fiberglass caps were added to the aluminum hulls to give a “modern” flair to these boats. I did not operate without the cap because I dig the modern flair on the 50’s boats. 😎

    Polishing or paint

Correction to my post… my first pass was 800 grit. Not 80!

Removal of alluminum boat fiberglass top cap

Doesn’t appear to be. I have been able to “dry-fit” the cap back in place a couple of times when I moved the boat. It has been off for 10 years.

    Polishing or paint

I was told that I couldn’t bring back the color on this boat and I should paint it. Glad I didn’t listen. Wet sand 80/1500/2000. Three levels of rubbing compounds/ polish. Finished with wax.

Removal of alluminum boat fiberglass top cap

I have an Blue Star Islander (aluminum hull/ fiberglass cap). I wish I didn’t separate them. My goal is to keep original and all I did was increase the work required to restore. And thus it has taken a back seat in other projects.

    what's one more boat ? - 1979 Sunfish

Finished bringing the gelcoat back on the deck this weekend. Almost pain free, need to keep a better eye out for the hardware screws left on the deck!

    what's one more boat ? - 1979 Sunfish

Worked on bringing back the gelcoat color this weekend. Wet sanding with 800/1500/2000. Then used Meguire’s 49 then 9 and finally 7. The color came back better than expected!

I took the Angle grinder with 40 grit flap wheel to the ugly fiberglass on transom. It really ripped the material off quick. Dangerously quick! Looks like I got into the original gel coat. I think I will use an orbital with 80 grit to finish. Based on the photos, how much more do I need to...

    what's one more boat ? - 1979 Sunfish

I am ready to remove this mess of fiberglass. I assume the only way to do it is by aggressively sanding. Any tips?
