On my Merc 50, the forward/reverse lever locks when I advance it to the point that the throttle is advancing. I am unable to return it to the neutral position. (Which isn't really neutral, as I am stuck in forward only!!!) Surely someone with a Merc can provide some much needed correct counsel on this frustration!!! Thanks.

Re: More info on forward only

Did you remove this lower unit?
You may have to drop the lower unit for two possable causes. One, the cam may be out of adjustment on the shift shaft. This is possable if the lower unit has n\been removed for impeller service,or some other reason, not otherwise ,unless the cam teeth have been stripped-off,which you'll see at a glance (but very rare).
When you have it off, take a pair of pliers, and manually turn the cam forward/neutral/reverse,while turning the driveshaft clockwise by hand, observing the prop. If you cannot get the prop to reverse using this meathod, you have a problem in the gearbox.
If all checks-out ok, adjust the topside linkage to it's proper neutral point (binickle in neutral, neutral start switch on). Manually shift the lower unit into neutral, and install it. Sometimes, the cam will move-out of neutral as you shove it home. If so,drop it again, and reset it to neutral. Once it is bolted up in neutral, shift the control to reverse. If no reverse, the linkage can be adjusted, but not much, without loosing neutral-start.
If you can't get reverse without loosing neutral/forard, you may have gear,or clutch damage in the gearcase. You'll need "the book".
