Shift interrupt switch

ok folks..... I have a 1995 3.0 that originally had the DDIS ignition system. I switched over to a delco style electronic ignition. I also obtained a different engine harness along with the distributor to replace the pulse sensor that was on the DDIS system. I've switched harnesses, plugged everything in and the boat runs great. I am not able to get my shift interruptor switch to work correctly while shifting gears. Sometimes it gets stuck in reverse. And I have to shut the engine off to get it back into neutral. I try to activating the switch manually, and it does not kill the engine. I've tried grounding out the white with green wire, and the engine runs. I'm thinking I have a bad switch or a bad distributor module inside the distributor. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated

Does your switch operate normally open or normally closed. normally open should produce a ground to the green/white wire to stumble the motor, a normally closed switch opens the circuit . I switched from the N/O to the new type N/C . you simply remove the power wire from the coil and connect 1 side of the switch and the other side of the switch back to the coil positive side. When shifting out of gear IN THE WATER with cause a stumble

Well, I believe mine is normally open. And when the roller pushes against the thin metal strip that activates the switch, which would then be closed

I wasn't aware there is a normally closed type switch for my 3.0 mercruiser

The older switch is NLA and the newest shift plate has the updated switch and according to mercruiser the new switch does not fit the old plate so you would need the newer type to connert to the NC to interrupt the power to the coil to stumble the motor
